DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team controlled proceedings throughout the 90 minutes, outshooting Purdue Fort Wayne 39-1 and scoring four times in a Summit League victory on Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Denver stays second in the Summit League table with the win, but a South Dakota State draw on Sunday afternoon pulled Denver to within three points of the Jackrabbits with a game in hand. DU will host SDSU in a battle for the top spot in the standings Thursday at 6 p.m. MT.
"Especially under the weather conditions, I'm really proud with how we came out and played one of our best games of the season for 90 minutes," head coach
Jeff Hooker said. "We were able to get a lot of players in this entire weekend, while maintaining a high level of play throughout the two matches. Now we'll focus on getting warm, and getting ready for a good South Dakota State team on Thursday."
Senior midfielder
Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.) netted her second brace of the season and the third of her career, scoring the first two for the Pioneers. Sophomore striker
Sami Feller (Grand Junction, Colo.) and freshman
Sydney Sharp (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) each added their third goal of the weekend as insurance in the Pioneers victory.
Denver's 39 shots rank four in Denver's Division I history, and are the Pioneers most since a match against UALR nine years and three days ago.
Adler's four-point afternoon moved her into ninth in Denver's DI history in career points with 66. The Denver senior also moved up the goals chart to ninth with 24 and up to fifth in game-winners with 11.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 19
th minute courtesy of Adler's first of two-consecutive goals. Senior centerback
Cheyenne Shorts (Denver, Colo.) took her first shot of the day from 30 yards out, and bounced it right in-front of the keeper, causing a rebound opportunity in the six-yard box that Adler pounced on for her first goal since August 29.
Denver has outscored opponents 209-81 in the first half hour of matches since 2002, including 11-3 last season and 8-1 in 2019.
Adler's second came in the 56
th minute off assists from sophomore
Natalie Beckman (Denver, Colo.) and classmate
Camryn MacMillan (Littleton, Colo.). Beckman rattled the crossbar with a shot from outside the 18. MacMillan headed it to Adler who buried her fourth of the season and doubled Denver's lead.
Feller picked off a Purdue Fort Wayne pass in the Pioneers attacking third, turned and fired for her sixth of the 2019 campaign and the 15
th of her career in the 62
nd minute.
Sharp made it 4-0 in the 74
th off the first career assist from freshman
Kaitlyn Glover (Englewood, Colo.).
In addition to the 39-1 shot edge, Denver put 20 of those shots on target (20-1) and took all 12 corners in the contest.
