DENVER – The No. 2 Denver Pioneers (8-1-1, 0-1-2-1) tied the No. 9 North Dakota Fighting Hawks (7-1-2, 2-0-1-1) 1-1 before falling in NCHC three-on-three overtime on Friday at Magness Arena.
The low-scoring, back-and-forth affair marked the 10
th time in the last 14 meetings Denver and North Dakota have played a game decided by one or fewer goals. Two goals in 57 seconds midway through the second period marked the only scoring through regulation, NCAA overtime and 2:22 of NCHC overtime before Colton Poolman found a loose puck in the slot and ripped a shot over the blocker of
Magnus Chrona to give the Fighting Hawks the extra point in the conference standings.
"It was a good hockey game," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "There wasn't a lot of open ice for parts of the game. Both teams had some looks. I thought we had some real good chances that we didn't capitalize on. I was proud of our effort to stick with it. If we play like that most nights, good things are going to happen."
After a failing to convert on a pair of power plays in the first period, North Dakota capitalized on their first chance in the second as Jasper Weatherby redirected Jordan Kawaguchi's pass from the slot past Chrona. The power-play goal broke a 30-minute scoreless stretch, but the Fighting Hawks' lead lasted only 57 seconds before
Kohen Olischefski found a loose puck in the North Dakota crease to make it 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season.
The Pioneers had chances to take the lead after their game-tying goal. With three minutes left in the second,
Hank Crone's tight-angle shot yielded a rebound for
Ian Mitchell who was denied by Adam Scheel's outstretched pad. Denver's next opportunity came on the penalty kill early in the third as
Tyson McLellan rang a shot off the right post.
North Dakota killed the Denver's fourth and final power play of the night at 7:13 of the third period, leaving the Pioneers 0/4 on the power play and 4/5 on the penalty kill.
