DENVER – Junior defenseman Ian Mitchell of the Denver Pioneers hockey team (11-4-3, 3-3-2-1) and alum Patrick Wiercioch have been named to Team Canada for the 2019 Spengler Cup to be held from Dec. 26 – Dec. 31 in Davos, Switzerland.
 
In its 93^rd year, the Spengler Cup is the oldest club tournament in the world. The six-team, invite-only tournament features top European clubs from Switzerland (2), the Czech Republic, Russia and Finland as well as Team Canada.
 
In his third year with the Pioneers, Mitchell leads Denver defensemen with three goals and nine assists in 18 games to compliment his career 69 points in 97 games. Last season, the Chicago Blackhawks prospect and Denver captain had six goals, 21 assists and 18 penalty minutes through 39 games to lead Denver defensemen in points and lead all Pioneer skaters with 12 power-play points and 66 blocked shots.
 
Internationally, Mitchell, a Calahoo, Alberta native, has represented his country at the 2015 Canada Winter games, the 2015 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup and the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he posted one goal and two assists in five games last January.

Wiercioch had 18 goals and 44 assists in 75 games with Denver from 2008-10.
