Snap Shots: Week 13

Ian Mitchell and Bobby Brink of the No. 6 Denver Pioneers hockey team (11-4-3, NCHC 3-3-2-1) get underway at the World Junior Championship and Spengler Cup, while the rest of the team returns from holiday break ahead of its rematch of the 2019 National Semifinal against UMass on Jan. 3-4 in Magness Arena.

-The Pioneers are 3-1-1 in their last five games. Denver is 6/20 (30%) on the power play and 14/15 (93.3%) on the penalty kill during that stretch
-The Pioneers' penalty kill ranks 5th in the NCAA, going 61/67 (91.0%). Denver has scored three shorthanded goals, T- 5th in the NCAA
-Denver ranks 4th in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (35.11). The Pioneers have outshot their opponent in 16 of their 18 games this season and are 11-3-2 in those games
-After this weekend, Denver will have a 19-day stretch before returning to Magness Arena for its final non-conference series of the season, a rematch of the 2019 National Semifinal with UMass Amherst
-Cole Guttman has four goals in his last three games
 
Bobby Brink Named to U.S. Roster for 2020 World Junior Championship
-Bobby Brink was named to the final 23-man U.S. National Junior Team roster set to compete at the 2020 World Junior Championship to be held from Dec. 26 – Jan. 5 in the Czech Republic
-The United States opens play with a preliminary game against Canada on Dec. 26 at 11 a.m. MT. All U.S. games will be broadcast on the NHL Network and the full schedule is available here
 
Ian Mitchell and Patrick Wiercioch to Represent Canada at Spengler Cup
-Ian Mitchell and alum Patrick Wiercioch were named to Team Canada for the 2019 Spengler Cup to be held from Dec. 26 – Dec. 31 in Davos, Switzerland
-Canada gets underway against HC Ocelari Trinec on Dec. 26 at 12:15 p.m. MT. The full schedule is available here

-Magnus Chrona is 8-4-2 with a 2.13 GAA, 2nd among NCAA freshmen, a .920 SV%, 3rd among NCAA freshmen, and two shutouts, 2nd among NCAA freshmen
-Bobby Brink has seven goals, T-4th among NCAA freshmen, 51 shots, 4th among NCAA freshmen, and 13 points, T-12th among NCAA freshmen
 
Scoring Stats
-Denver is 9-0-1 when leading after the second period
-The Pioneers have a +20 overall goal margin, 11th in the NCAA, as well as a +16 margin in the second period, 2nd in the NCAA
 
Denver vs. UMass
-The Pioneers and Minutemen will play for the first time since the 2019 National Semifinal where UMass defeated Denver 4-3 (OT) in Buffalo, N.Y.
-Denver leads the all-time series 3-1-0 and is 1-0-0 at Magness Arena

70th Anniversary Season
-The Pioneers are playing in their 70th Anniversary Season. Since its inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
 
Non-Conference Streak
-Prior to the Dec. 6 loss at then-No. 20 Arizona State, the Pioneers were undefeated in 19 straight non-conference games with a 17-0-2 mark in that stretch
-Denver is 22-3-5 against non-conference opponents since the 2017-18 season
 
UP NEXT: Denver Hockey presented by Centura Health will have a 19-day break before returning for non-conference action on Jan. 3-4 against UMass
