BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of Denver women's basketball team fell to 5-4 on the season after falling 71-59 on Sunday afternoon in the Montagne Center to Lamar.
Freshman
Uju Ezeudu led the Pioneers with 19 points and tied a game-high with eight rebounds. Senior
Madison Nelson chipped in 10 points with a game-high tying eight boards.
Denver and Lamar traded baskets to open the game as neither team was able to gain a lead larger than three in the opening quarter. Ashlan Miles finished a layup with just under a minute to go in the first to give Lamar a 12-11 lead heading into the second.
The Cardinals opened the second quarter on a 9-4 run to jump out to a 21-15 advantage at the media timeout. After senior
Lauren Loven hit a three with 13 seconds to go in the half, the game was deadlocked at 27-27.
After going down 45-38, redshirt junior
Briana Johnson cut the Crimson and Gold's deficit to five with 1:05 to play in the third as the Pioneers went to the final quarter trailing 45-40.
Lamar jumped out to a 15-point lead, up 59-44 just before the final media timeout. DU made a late push as junior
Alexius Foster brought them within nine after knocking one down behind the arc with 1:33 remaining. The Cardinals held off the Pioneers to go on and win 71-59.
