No. 7 Denver Scores 197.400 in Front of Record-Setting Crowd

Lynnzee Brown’s 10.0 on floor helps lead DU to fourth-highest score in program history

DENVER – The No. 7-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team posted the fourth-highest score in program history on Sunday, tallying a 197.400 in front of the largest-ever crowd for a DU Gymnastics meet.

Denver welcomed 6,100 fans to Magness Arena, which shattered the previous attendance record of 4,634 from January 14, 2018.

Sophomore Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) electrified the record-setting crowd with the first perfect 10.0 of her career on floor. It is Denver's first 10.0 since junior Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) did so on vault on February 18, 2017, and the first on floor since Nina McGee on March 4, 2016.

"It's super exciting to do what I've been practicing," Brown said of her routine. "I wanted to scream (after sticking my final pass).

"I planned out my routine to be right in front of my teammates, and their eye contact kept me motivated throughout the performance. It's a reminder that I'm doing this for them and not for myself."

Denver began the meet on vault, earning a 49.125 overall. Brown led DU's lineup in scoring with a 9.875 that tied for second. Karr's 9.850 was DU's next-highest score while senior Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Mia Sundstrom (Boulder, Colo.) added matching 9.825s.

Two Pioneers tied their career highs on bars to help DU to a 49.375 team score, which ties the eighth-highest score in program history. Karr was second overall on the event with her 9.925, and Brown finished tied for third with a season-high 9.900. Senior Claire Kern (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) each scored a 9.875, which tied both of their personal bests. Sophomore Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) earned a 9.800 for DU's final counted score of the rotation.

Denver kept momentum going on beam, tying the second-highest score in program history with a 49.475. Karr and senior Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) anchored the lineup with matching 9.950s, which tied their career highs and matches the fifth-highest beam score in school history. Freshman Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) went 9.925 for Denver's next-highest score. Brown's season-high-tying 9.850 joined Ruiz's 9.800 as the final contributed scores for DU on the event.

DU finished the meet on floor, recording a 49.425 to match the team's season high. Brown's perfect 10.0 concluded the meet and finished her atop the podium. Karr tied for second overall with a season-best 9.925. Schou again tied her career high with a 9.900. Sundstrom added a 9.850—just off her season high—while Ruiz scored a 9.750.

Karr captured her second-consecutive all-around title with a 39.650 overall, which matches the eighth-highest score in DU history. Brown was just off that pace, finishing second with a career-high 39.625. Ruiz completed DU's sweep of the podium with a 39.175.

DU finished just three tenths behind No. 1 Oklahoma with final scores of 197.700-197.400. It was the smallest margin of victory between DU and OU since Denver's last win over Oklahoma on January 6, 2006 (193.850-193.325).

The University of Denver women's gymnastics team, presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, continues its three-meet home stand next weekend when DU hosts Illinois State on Saturday, February 16, at 6 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium. The meet is already sold out.

Single meet tickets are on sale for DU's two remaining home meets (February 24 and March 10), starting at $9. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the Ritchie Center Box Office at 303-871-4625.
