DENVER – The No. 7 Denver Pioneers (16-8-4, 8-8-2-2) fired 49 shots, but fell to the Miami RedHawks (11-16-4, 5-12-2-1) 3-1 on Friday in Magness Arena.
The Pioneers outshot the RedHawks 47-21, coming within two shots of their season-high, but Ryan Larkin's 46-save performance guided Miami to victory.
"I think there was a lack of desperation and there was also a lack of execution," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "We had some line rushes, some four-on-twos and three-on-twos, so lots of chances to make plays, but we did not execute offensively."
Despite outshooting the RedHawks 17-5 in the opening period, Denver fell behind 1-0 at the first intermission on Ryan Sirorky's netfront redirect only 3:08 into the game.
Trailing by a wide margin on the shot chart, Miami continued to capitalize on its limited chances with back-to-back goals early in the second. The RedHawks scored twice in a 47-second span to mount a 3-0 advantage by 2:40 of the period. Sirorky scored his second of the night on a shot from the point at 1:53 of the frame, then Karch Bachman added another with a backhander from the slot. Denver carried a three-goal deficit and 16-shot lead into the third period.
Ian Mitchell broke the shutout on the power play at 3:35 of the third, taking a pass from
Liam Finlay and sending a shot from the point off the post and in.
Jack Doremus nearly cut the RedHawks' lead to one goal on a drive to the net at the midway point of the period, but Larkin denied the attempt with his outstretched pad. The Pioneers were thwarted on each chance in the closing minutes to take their first home loss since Dec. 7.
Denver finished 1/2 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill.
Devin Cooley made 18 saves.
