Denver Shuts Out Colorado College, 1-0

DENVER – Devin Cooley made 24 saves in his fourth shutout of the season as the No. 6 Denver Pioneers (18-8-4, 10-8-2-2) defeated the Colorado College Tigers (12-16-4, 6-11-3-0) 1-0 on Tuesday at the Broadmoor World Arena.

Tyson McLellan scored the lone goal of the night in the first period, then Cooley took control to secure his second shutout in his last three starts. Denver went 4/4 on the penalty kill in the win.

"I loved our jump in the first," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "We generated "grade A" chances off of really good puck pressure. I thought in the second they did a better job of breaking pucks out and getting pucks to space, which allowed them to get in our end a bit. In the third we were in the box for six minutes, but I loved our penalty kill and loved our commitment to team defense…I'm really proud of our effort."

The lone goal of the night came at 7:48 of the first period when Kyle Mayhew took a pass on the left-wing boards and slid the puck to Jake Durflinger, who flicked a backhand pass across the goal to McLellan. McLellan's goal was his first of the season and one of a plethora of attempts for the Pioneers in the opening frame as they outshot the Tigers, 14-8.

Both teams traded chances in the second with Colorado College getting the best opportunity midway through the period. Killing a penalty at 11:30, the Tigers' Mason Bergh nearly seized an opportunity to tie the game with a shorthanded breakaway, but rang his shot off the crossbar.

Six minutes into the third period Colorado College almost struck again. With the goalie pulled on the delayed penalty, Trey Bradley received a pass behind the Pioneers defense and sent a rising shot on Devin Cooley. The pressure on the delayed penalty energized the Tigers on the ensuing power play, but Denver's penalty kill limited the scoring chances and Cooley made a shoulder stop on Trey Bradley's one-timer in the waning seconds of the man advantage to keep the Pioneers' lead. Denver held the one-goal advantage through the final minutes to seal the victory and move to 1-0-1 in the Battle for the Gold Pan.

Denver outshot Colorado College, 30-24.
