DENVER – The No. 6-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team celebrate its senior class in style with the fourth-highest score in program history (197.675) during the team's final home meet of the season.
Denver topped No. 18 Nebraska (196.225), No. 21 Arizona State (194.825) and Pittsburgh (194.200) in front of more than 5,000 fans in Magness Arena, which is now the second-largest crowd in school history.
Junior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) captured the all-around title with a 39.725, matching the fourth-best score in DU history and becoming her new season high. She also won the vault title with a near-perfect 9.975 and shared the bars title with teammate sophomore
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.).
Senior
Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) tied her career high with a 9.950 to win the beam title. Brown completed Denver's title sweep with a near-perfect 9.975 on floor.
"The consistency that this team has shown over the last several weeks in and out of the gym is their identity," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "The work that they put in during the preseason helped create the depth that we have, which has propelled us to the next level."
Denver began the meet on vault, led by Karr's third 9.975 of the season. Brown tied for second overall with a 9.900. Senior
Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.) went 9.825 while freshman
Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) added a 9.800. Sophomore
Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) again competed in the lineup and tied her career best with a 9.775.
Led by matching 9.950s from Karr and Brown, DU tallied a 49.475 on bars, which ties the second-best score in DU history. Glynn's season high-tying 9.925 completed Denver's sweep of the event podium. Chesnok's 9.850 and senior
Claire Kern's (Charlotte, N.C.) 9.800 rounded out the Pioneers' counted scores.
Senior
Grace Broadhurst (Broomfield, Colo.), who has overcome several injuries during her career, competed in the bars lineup for the first time, earning a 9.775 and an extensive celebration from her teammates.
Schou's 9.950 helped lead DU to a 49.450 on beam, which becomes DU's seventh-highest all-time score on the event. Freshman
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) tied for second with a 9.900, and Chesnok tied her career best with a 9.875 in her second-straight appearance in the beam lineup. Karr, too, scored a 9.875 while Brown had a 9.850.
DU finished the meet on floor with another near-perfect 9.975 from Brown. Karr again tied her season's best score with a 9.925 to finish second overall. Ruiz scored a 9.875, and Schou added a 9.850. Junior
Courtney Loper (West Des Moines, Iowa) competed in the lineup for the second meet in a row, scoring a 9.850, just .025 off her career best.
Karr's 39.725 won the all-around title, and Brown finished in second overall with a 39.675.
Following the end of competition, the team celebrated its four seniors – Broadhurst, Chesnok, Kern and Schou – who competed at home for the final time in their careers.
Speaking about the senior class, Kutcher-Rinehart said, "All four bring such different strengths to the team. They've showed commitment, excellence and passion, and their leadership is outstanding."
Denver wraps up the regular season at Big 12 opponent and No. 23-ranked Iowa State on Friday, March 15.
