Tulsa, Okla. - The Denver Pioneers men's tennis team (13-9, 6-0) fell 4-3 to the Drake Bulldogs in the Summit League Championship on Saturday.
Denver took the doubles point with Mattia Ros/Pedro Fernandez del Valle winning 6-2 at No. 2 and Matt Summers/James Davis winning 7-5 at No. 1. Drake erased the Pioneers' 1-0 lead with a pair of quick singles wins, though Davis' 7-6, 6-2 win against Bavo Philips at No. 3 tied the match 2-2 with three courts left in action. Ignatius Castelino logged Denver's last singles win with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win against Barny Thorold at No. 5, but a pair of Bulldog victories at No. 6 & No. 2 iced the match. Tom Hands won the deciding match 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2, topping Ros to help Drake to its second straight title.Â
