DENVER – University of Denver women's basketball head coach Jim Turgeon announced the addition of Ellen Holton to his staff as an assistant coach on Friday.

"We always look for a good fit with our other coaches and the players, I think she fits well," Turgeon said. "She brings an energy with her that will help us get to the next level. Ellen is a lot like me, she hates to lose which is a quality I like as well."

The Elgin, Illinois native has spent the past three seasons at the University of North Alabama as a graduate assistant, then as an assistant after being promoted in 2018. She helped coach the Lions to a 64-24 overall mark and three postseason appearances.

"I'm so excited to be joining the University of Denver women's basketball program and the Denver community," Holton said. "The growth of the program over the past two years under coach Turgeon has been exciting to watch. I am thrilled to be able to join him and his staff and be part of the incredible work they are doing."

Prior to joining the North Alabama staff, Holton spent a season at Wheeling Jesuit University as a graduate assistant. She helped lead the Cardinals to a 27-6 record during the 2015-16 campaign, tying the program's all-time win record and advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time in more than a decade.

Holton began her collegiate playing career at Tusculum College before transferring to Northern Kentucky University for her final three years. While as Tusculum, she helped guide the Pioneers to a Regional Championship title in 2010 and a NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance. During her senior season at Northern Kentucky, the school's first year at the Division I level, the Norse earned a postseason berth with a spot in the Women's Basketball Invitational.

Denver returns to the court at the end of October to open the 2019-20 campaign.
