Denver Downs Drake for First Win of 2019

Halvorson and Feller score, Wilson records second-straight shutout to lead Pioneers to 2-0 win

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team defeated Drake 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

Denver got goals from junior Meg Halvorson (Englewood, Colo.) and sophomore Samantha Feller (Grand Junction, Colo.), while senior captain Brittany Wilson (Littleton, Colo.) kept her second-straight cleansheet and the 19th of her career in the victory.

Halvorson got Denver on the scoresheet in the 7th minute, sending her 25-yard strike to the far post, off the crossbar and into the back of the net for Denver's first goal of the season. Senior captain Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.) found Halvorson just inside the right touchline. Halvorson cut the ball back across to the center of the field, and netted the 12th goal of her career from just to the right of the D.

Adler's assist was the 16th of her career, moving into a tie for 12th in Denver's Division I history.

Denver went into halftime with the 1-0 scoreline, and outshooting Drake 6-0.

Feller, the 2018 Summit League Freshman of the Year, scored her 10th goal in 19 matches when she doubled Denver's advantage in the 52nd minute. Halvorson got the ball in the right channel, chipped the ball over the Drake outside back and toe-poked it to Feller in the box. Feller took a few touches to her left to improve her angle before scoring her fourth goal in the last seven matches from a yard behind the penalty spot.

Wilson was asked to just make one save in her 30th career victory. The Colorado native has kept seven cleansheets in her last eight starts.

The Pioneers are now 96-7-3 when holding opponents to less than five shots in a match (four today), and 106-3-3 when allowing two shots on goal or less (one today).

Denver will continue a four-match homestand to open the regular season on Thursday when the Pioneers welcome Texas to the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
