DENVER - Safeway and the University of Denver Division of Athletics and Recreation have reached a partnership for the grocery retailer to become the Official Grocery Partner of DU Athletics, Safeway announced on Wednesday.
 
Safeway will receive exposure at the Ritchie Center, Peter Barton Stadium, DU Soccer Stadium, print, digital, game day takeovers, radio advertising and exclusive use of marks. The multi-year contract will surround all DU NCAA sports with a unique and specific emphasis on women's sports & wellness. Safeway will also contribute to the Pioneer Nutrition Station which will benefit the wellness and performance of DU student athletes.
 
"Safeway has a rich history in Denver dating back more than 90 years and we've always focused on grassroots support of the community, through veterans programs, food banks and education. This sponsorship marks the next evolution of our support and provides a great opportunity to show our loyal Denver customers that we are equally passionate and proud to be associated with this great University," said Todd Broderick, President Albertsons/Safeway Denver Division.
 
Safeway plans to engage DU fans and customers through game day events, social media, fan engagement and giveaways. Pioneer fans can also expect some "crimson and gold" apparel and promotions in Safeway stores around the state. As part of the company's commitment to the University of Denver, Safeway wrapped one of its new tractor trailers with DU athletics facilities and marks.

Safeway operates 102 stores in Colorado and has nearly 8500 employees.
