Snap Shots: Week 17

DENVER - After gaining ground in the NCHC standings with a pair of conference overtime/shootout wins at Omaha last weekend, the No. 5 Denver Pioneers hockey team (15-4-5, 5-3-4-3) is one point behind Minnesota Duluth for second in the NCHC standings with 12 games left in the regular season. Denver will travel to Miami this weekend for its second straight road series.

-The Pioneers are on a nine-game unbeaten streak (6-0-3), tied for their longest unbeaten stretch of the season. Denver opened the season on a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) from Oct. 5 – Nov. 8. Ten games would mark Denver's longest unbeaten streak in a single season since its 13-game winning streak from Jan. 21 – March 11, 2017
-Denver allows the 8th fewest goals per game in the NCAA (2.08)
-The Pioneers' penalty kill is 6th in the NCAA, going 80/90 (88.9%). Denver has scored four shorthanded goals, T- 5th in the NCAA
-Denver ranks 3rd in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (35.67). The Pioneers have outshot their opponent in 20 of their 24 games this season and are 14-3-3 in those games. Denver has outshot its opponent in 11 of its last 13 games and has outshot its opponent by double digits on nine occasions

-Denver's freshman class ranks 2nd in NCAA scoring with 93 points (33-60-93) and accounts for 43% of the team's point production
-Sophomores Emilio Pettersen, Brett Stapley and Cole Guttman are among the Pioneers' top six scorers

-Cole Guttman is T-1st in the NCAA with five game-winning goals
-Ian Mitchell is T-10th among NCAA defensemen with 19 points (4-15-19)
-Magnus Chrona has a 2.19 GAA, 2nd among NCAA freshmen, a .920 SV%, 3rd among NCAA freshmen, and two shutouts, 2nd among NCAA freshmen. He is 12-4-3 this season with the 2nd-most wins among NCAA freshmen
-Bobby Brink has nine goals, T-4th among NCAA freshmen, 65 shots, T-4th among NCAA freshmen, and 19 points (9-10-19), T-8th among NCAA freshmen

-The Pioneers are 15-0-1 when scoring three or more goals and 0-4-4 when scoring fewer than three goals
-Prior to last weekend, Denver had scored three or more goals in each of its last six games

-Brett Stapley is on a five-game point streak with one goal and seven assists

Gwozdecky Inducted to Denver Athletics Hall of Fame
-Former head coach George Gwozdecky was named among 12 inductees for the 2020 Denver Athletic Hall of Fame class to be honored on campus May 16, 2020
-Gwozdecky posted a 443-267-64 record with the Pioneers from 1994-2013, winning back-to-back National Championships in 2004 & 2005, three WCHA regular-season titles, four WCHA playoff titles and posting 16 20-win seasons. He received the Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year in 2005
-In 2008, Gwozdecky honored head coach David Carle's scholarship to DU when Carle was deemed unable to play for medical reasons. Carle joined the Pioneers staff as a student assistant coach before graduating in 2012 and returning to Denver as a full-time assistant under Jim Montgomery in 2014

-Denver is 12-0-2 when leading after the second period
-The Pioneers have a +28 overall goal margin, 10th in the NCAA, as well as a +35 margin in the second and third periods, 2nd in the NCAA

70th Anniversary Season
-The Pioneers are playing in their 70th Anniversary Season. Since its inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
