No. 5 Denver Defeats Miami, 5-2

Oxford, Ohio  –  The No. 5 Denver Pioneers hockey team (17-4-5, 7-3-4-3) extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games with a 5-2 win against the Miami RedHawks on Saturday at Steve Cady Arena.

Denver took the lead at 2:10 of the first period and never trailed, outshooting Miami 17-6 in the final 40 minutes and improving to 8-0-3 in its 11-game stretch. The RedHawks drew closest late in the second period with a goal to cut the Pioneers' lead to 3-2, but Denver's pair of third-period goals put the game out of reach.

The victory marked the sixth time this season the Pioneers have scored five or more goals. It also improved Denver's record to 16-0-1 when scoring three or more goals.

"I thought in the second and third period we really kicked it into gear," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "We were really good in all three zones, taking away time and space. We didn't spend a lot of time in our own zone after that."

After going 2/3 on the man advantage Friday, the Pioneers picked up where they left off with a power-play goal only 22 seconds into their first opportunity of the night. Ian Mitchell, firing from the boards above the faceoff circle, seemed to surprise Ben Kraws with his wrist shot. The RedHawks responded with Derek Daschke's shot from the point at 10:35 of the first period, however Kohen Olischefski's third goal of the weekend at 19:24 put Denver in front 2-1 at the first intermission. Skating into Liam Finlay's low-to-high pass, Olischefski beat his defenseman to the net and lifted a shot over Kraws' blocker.

Olischefski's point-packed weekend continued at 13:37 of a fast-paced second period as he found Emilio Pettersen in the slot for a snipe to make it 3-1. The Pioneers held their two-goal lead for less than four minutes before Monte Graham, driving into the zone off the rush, made it 3-2 with a shot on the ice, off the post and into the net.

Denver's second-period advantage was as much a testament to its offense as it was its defense. Mitchell swept a backdoor pass out of the Pioneer crease with 15:20 left in the frame, then Cooley denied Karch Bachman on a similar play later in the period, coming left to right across the crease for the save.

The Pioneers cushioned their one-goal lead in the third period with Bobby Brink finding Jaakko Heikkinen to make it 4-2 at 4:11 and Mitchell benefiting from a carom off a RedHawks defenseman at 8:33 to make it 5-2. Nine skaters had points for Denver in the win.

"We didn't have any passengers tonight," Carle said. "I think you saw our depth and our balance in our lines."
