Omaha, Neb. – The No. 8 Denver Pioneers (3-5-0, 3-5-0-0) fell 3-0 to the Miami RedHawks on Thursday in the NCHC Pod at Baxter Arena.
Turning Point
Matt Barry's goal at 7:13 of the third period came on the heels of a five-on-three Pioneer penalty kill, giving Miami momentum and a 2-0 lead.
Quotable
"They broke pucks out well and they broke down our puck pressure. We looked disconnected in a lot of moments of the game. That was the biggest thing that stood out." - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle
First Period
The teams skated to an even first period with Miami taking a slight statistical edge in shots and faceoffs.
Brett Stapley and
Jake Durflinger nearly connected late in the period for the Pioneers' best chance of the frame, but Durflinger couldn't direct the pass past Ludvig Persson.
Second Period
Miami took a 1-0 lead 40 seconds into the period with Robby Drazner drifting a shot from the right point that passed through crossing bodies before beating
Magnus Chrona. Denver had the first power play of the game at 3:47 but was unsuccessful with back-to-back shot blocks from Ben Lown stifling a pair of Pioneer attempts from the blue line.
Third Period
The Pioneers put themselves penalty trouble early in the frame. At 4:48, Durflinger and
Mike Benning took overlapping minor penalties to put Denver on a five-on-three penalty kill for 1:37. The Pioneers came back to even strength at 6:48, but lost momentum 25 seconds later when Miami capitalized on a turnover in front of the Denver net. Lown collected the puck to the left of Chrona and centered a one-timer for Barry to give the RedHawks a 2-0 lead. Denver's lone power play of the period at 13:30 was unsuccessful. Phil Knies added an empty netter for Miami with 1:33 left.
