[13/13] Denver Hosts 2020 Faceoff Classic This Weekend

The Pioneers will take on St. Bonaventure Saturday at 1:30 p.m. MT and Cleveland State Sunday at 4:30 p.m. MT

THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE                                           
•    Jack Hannah netted his first and the 21st sock trick in the program's history, but a 7-0 run by Duke in the first half was too much to overcome for the Pioneers in a 15-13 loss on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. 
• The Pioneers will continue a four-game homestand next weekend when Denver hosts its annual Faceoff Classic this weekend. Denver welcomes St. Bonaventure on February 22 at 1:30 p.m. MT, before taking on Cleveland State on February 23 at 4:30 p.m. MT. Both games will be streamed live on Pioneer Vision and broadcast on 104.3 The Fan. 
• Denver will conclude its four-game homestand with another clash against an ACC foe at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, welcoming North Carolina to the Mile High City on March 1 at 12 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on Altitude and 104.3 The Fan. 

THE TIERNEY FILE                                                         
•    Head coach Bill Tierney is in his 11th season with the Pioneers, holding a 133-42 record at DU and a 405-135 career record in his 36th season.
•    Tierney became the first coach to win National Championships with two different programs in 2015, and has an NCAA-best seven men's lacrosse national titles to his name (six at Princeton). 
•    Tierney is also the first coach to win 100 of his first 140 games in charge at two different programs.
• Tierney became the second coach to reach 400 career wins when the Pioneers defeated Georgetown 16-9 on March 30, 2019. The Denver bench boss reached the milestone 62 games faster than longtime friend and competitor John Danowski (414 - LIU Post/Hofstra/Duke - 1983-pres.).
• The men's lacrosse head coaching position was endowed this preseason, and will be known in perpetuity as the William G. Tierney Head Men's Lacrosse Coach. A group of former players, players and alums committed $1.25 million to the endowment. 

DEFENDING THE LACROSSE CAPITAL OF THE WEST                               
•    The Pioneers are 100-20 since Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium was built in 2005.
•    Denver is 69-11 under head coach Bill Tierney at Peter Barton.
•    DU had its 22-game home winning streak snapped on May 7, 2016 against Marquette in the BIG EAST Championship, which at the time was the longest active in the country and finished as the 10th longest home winning streak in NCAA history.
•    The Pioneers have recorded 51 sellouts in the history of Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, including five in 2014, 2015 and 2018, eight in 2016 and 10 in 2017.
•    Denver is 40-8 under Tierney in sellouts at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. 

DOUBLE-DIGIT GOALS                                 
•    The Pioneers have scored double-digit goals 137 times since the arrival of 11th year head coach Bill Tierney.
•    DU is 121-16 when scoring double-digit goals since the start of the 2010 season.
•    Denver has scored double-digit goals 156 times since Matt Brown joined the staff full time in 2008. Since 2008, Denver is 136-20.

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY                            
• Denver is 95-6 under head coach Bill Tierney when its defense allows fewer than 10 goals in a game.
• The Pioneers defense held Air Force to just 14 shots on goal in the 2019 season opener, allowing just four goals on those 14 shots. The Pioneers limited Air Force to 16 shots on goal in the 2020 season opener, winning it 13-7. 

MIDFIELD SCORING                                       
•    89 of Denver's 181 goals last season came from the midfield. Jack Hannah led the midfield with 34 points on 16 goals and 18 assists. Ted Sullivan had 17 and 8 (25 points) and Alex Simmons had 16 points on 12 and 4. 
•    16 of Denver's 26 goals in the first two games of the 2020 campaign have come from the Denver midfield. Hannah leads all Denver scorers with seven, Simmons has added three, Sullivan has two and Denver's defensive midfield has combined for three. 

UNFRIENDLY PIPES                                       
•    Denver hit a post or crossbar 36 times last season, compared to its opponents 13.
•    Of the returners, Jack Hannah hit six, while Ted Sullivan and Ethan Walker each struck four pipes last season. 
•    Johnny Marrocco, Schuyler Blair and Ted Sullivan have all struck the pipe once this season, while Denver's opponents have hit two.

ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY                                                                    
• The 2020 Denver Pioneers have players from 17 different states across the country. 
• Since turning Division I ahead of the 1999 season, the Pioneers have had players from 32 different states. 
• The 32 states are: Alabama (1), Arizona (3), California (26), Colorado (92), Connecticut (31), Delaware (1), Florida (3), Georgia (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (9), Indiana (2), Kentucky (2), Maine (2), Maryland (19), Massachusetts (7), Michigan (8), Minnesota (6), Missouri (5), Nevada (3), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (22), New York (13), North Carolina (3), Ohio (18), Oregon (3), Penn (11), Rhode Island (3), Tennessee (2), Texas (10), Vermont (1), Virginia (4), Washington (8).

A LOOK AT THE FACEOFF DOT                             
•    Boos was 11-3-1 in faceoff match-ups last season (L: Cleveland State, UNC and Towson, T: Villanova in BE Semi), in the Pioneers first season after the career of four-time First Team All-American Trevor Baptiste.
•    In his collegiate debut, freshman Alec Stathakis went 16-of-21 with 12 ground balls in Denver's win at No. 15 Air Force...Boos went 1-for-2 in the opener. 
•    Denver went a combined 13-of-31 from the faceoff dot in its loss to No. 11 Duke on Feb. 15. 

SILLSTROP'S DEBUT                                 
•    Freshman attack JJ Sillstrop became the first Pioneer freshman to score five goals in his debut in Denver's Division I history, scoring each of Denver's first three goals and four of its first five in a 13-7 win at No. 15 Air Force on Feb. 8. Sillstrop earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for his performance. 
•    Nate Marano previously held the best mark, scoring four in Denver's last visit to Cadet Lacrosse Stadium in 2016 (played at Air Force's football stadium in 2018).  

HANNAH'S SOCK TRICK                                 
•    Junior midfielder Jack Hannah scored a career-high six goals to go with an assist for a career-high seven points in Denver's 15-13 loss to No. 11 Duke on Feb. 15.
•    Hannah's sock trick was the 21st in Denver's DI history, and the first at Peter Barton since Wes Berg scored seven in the first half against Villanova in 2015. 

DENVER ATHLETICS SUCCESS                            
•    Denver Athletics has claimed the I-AAA Directors' Cup in 11 of the last 12 seasons, for the top finish in the Directors' Cup standings amongst schools without football.
•    The Pioneers have claimed 33 National Championships in their history (Skiing 24, Hockey 8, Men's Lacrosse 1).
•    Men's lacrosse's Championship Weekend berth in 2017 is one of the athletic department's 23 DI National Semifinal appearances, including 10 since 2011.
•    Denver's 35th place overall Directors' Cup finish in 2016-17 is the department's best in its history. DU's men's programs finished fifth in the Capital One Cup for the second time in three years in 2016-17.

BONUS LACROSSE                                              
•    Denver is 10-6 in overtime under head coach Bill Tierney, winning the last six and nine of its last 10.
•    Colin Rutan scored the game-winner for the Pioneers in their only overtime game of the 2018 season, an 11-10 victory over Towson on March 24.
•    Denver did not play an overtime game in 2017 2019, and prior to the Towson win had played its last four overtime games against ACC schools, including three against Notre Dame (All Wins).

A GAME OF RUNS                                                 
• Denver has had 18 10-1 runs or better in games under head coach Bill Tierney, including in Denver's consecutive wins against Villanova and St. John's in 2018. 
• The Pioneers had a pair of six-goal runs in the second BIG EAST Semifinal on May 2, 2019. 
• Duke made a 7-0 run in the first quarter and early stages of the second on Feb. 15. Denver had just three possessions (all three turnovers) between Duke's second goal (10:19/1st) and its eighth (10:42/2nd).

SPREADING THE WEALTH                                         
• Denver has had 10 different players score goals in 11 of Denver's wins since the start of the 2015 season, including three-straight games from Feb. 20-28, 2016. (chart to left). Denver had nine different players score in its 15-6 win over Ohio St and in its 14-11 win over Marquette in 2016, in the 2016 BIG EAST Semifinals vs. Providence, in its win over Villanova on April 9, 2017, at St. John's on April 15, 2017, at Villanova on April 6, 2018 and vs. St. John's on April 16, 2018.
• Since OC and associate head coach Matt Brown was named a full time assistant in 2008, the Pioneers have had 10 or more players score goals in a game 17 times.
• The Pioneers have had five different players score at least two goals 16 times since the start of the 2014 season, including in Denver's win over Georgetown on March 30. (2019: 2 | 2018: 2 | 2017: 5 | 2016: 1 | 2015: 4 | 2014: 2).

MY THREE CAPTAINS                          
•    SSDM Danny Logan will serve as a captain for Bill Tierney for the second-straight season. Logan received Honorable Mention All-America honors in his senior season from both the coaches and the media.
•    Ethan Walker was an honorable mention All-American in 2017 and 2019, and earned third team honors in 2018. Walker is 58 points and 59 goals away from Wes Berg's career records in Denver's Division I history. 
•    Colin Squires will serve as Denver's third captain this season. Squires earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors last year, picking up 23 ground balls and forcing nine turnovers. 

INSIDE LACROSSE FRESHMEN RANKINGS        
•    Freshman faceoff specialist Alec Stathakis was the No. 4 rated recruit in the country this season, according to Inside Lacrosse. Stathakis was called up by Ohio State Nick Myers into the U.S. Under-19 Team camp over the holiday break. 
•    Attackman J.J. Sillstrop (19th), attackman Reed Babcock (90th) and goalie Jack Thompson (92nd) were also ranked in the Inside Lacrosse Top-100.  

HAT TRICK TRIOS                                 
•    Denver has had three players record hat tricks in the same game 22 times since the start of the 2014 season (19: Utah, Georgetown, Villanova (May 2), 18: at Villanova 17: vs. Notre Dame, Air Force, Georgetown, at Marquette, Air Force; 16: at North Carolina, St. John's, vs. Providence; 15: vs. Duke, Georgetown, Providence, at Villanova, vs.Georgetown). 

SEVENTH SEASON IN THE BIG EAST                       
•    Denver wrapped-up its sixth-consecutive BIG EAST regular season title with a 9-8 win over Marquette on April 26, 2019. The Crimson and Gold are now 30-1 all time in BIG EAST regular season play. Denver suffered its first loss since joining the league on April 6, 2019 against Villanova at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium to snap the 27-game regular season winning streak in the BIG EAST. 
•    The Pioneers had their 21-game winning streak against conference foes snapped on May 7, 2016 in the BIG EAST Final against Marquette (incl. conf. tournament). 

A LOOK AT WHAT'S NEXT                          
•    Denver will welcome North Carolina to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday, March 1. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. MT, and the game will be broadcast live on Altitude and 104.3 The Fan. 
•    North Carolina leads the all-time series 10-7, winning the last meeting at Peter Barton in 2017. 
•    Denver won three meetings from 2012-14, all in the NCAA First Round of NCAA Quarterfinals, kicking off the yearly date between the two programs that began in 2015.
