No. 7 Denver Blanks Miami, 7-0

DENVER – For the second straight night, the No. 7 Denver Pioneers hockey team (19-8-5, 9-7-4-3) scored seven goals, defeating the Miami RedHawks 7-0 on Saturday in Magness Arena.

Production from the sophomore class lifted the Pioneers as they secured their first weekend sweep at home since Jan. 10-11 against St. Cloud State. Five sophomores had multi-point games as the class combined for 14 points in the victory. Devin Cooley recorded 22 saves for his second shutout of the season and sixth of his career, while Emilio Pettersen paced Pioneer skaters with two goals and two assists.

Denver built its lead gradually. Cole Guttman's power play goal at 14:23 of the first put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 at the intermission, then Denver took control with four goals in the second period to mark its eighth game of the season with five or more goals.

"We stuck to our game plan and our details," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "I think we could've let things slip and we didn't, especially in the third period. We kept our foot on the gas and continued to play the way we need to play to have success. It doesn't matter your opponent this time of year, you want to be playing well. It was a big momentum and confidence builder for us, but we earned it in practice this week. We practiced really well, we got to work, and our mentality was right. We went out and showed it this weekend."

While frequent, the Pioneers' second-period scoring was spread out. Ian Mitchell made it 2-0 with a drifter from the left point at 6:53 of the second period, Emilio Pettersen sniped from the slot to extend the lead to 3-0 at 10:41, Griffin Mendel's shot from the point made it 4-0 at 15:56 and Pettersen returned for a highlight-reel goal at 18:28 to give Denver a 5-0 lead through two periods. Pettersen's move for his second goal brought RedHawks goalie Ben Kraws to the ice, leaving a gaping top half of the net.

Cooley saw limited action, though was called upon to make the rare save, none bigger than his sliding across the crease to deny Alex Mahalak with 30 seconds left in the second period.

Denver cushioned its lead with a pair of goals in the third period. Justin Lee scored on a one-timer on the power play at 12:53 to make it 6-0, then Brett Stapley added the seventh goal at 14:05.

Emilio Pettersen, Cole Guttman, Tyler Ward, Kyle Mayhew, Brett Stapley and Liam Finlay had multi-point games…Denver went 2/3 on the power play and 5/5 on the penalty kill…Denver swept the season series with Miami, 4-0-0….
