Klomhaus, Kogler Win Giant Slalom Qualifier Races

BOZEMAN, Mont.— Senior Storm Klomhaus and junior Tobias Kogler both won races to lead the University of Denver ski team in the RMISA Alpine Qualifier giant slalom races Thursday at the Bridger Bowl Ski Area.
On the same course as this week's RMISA Championships and next month's NCAA Championships, Klomhaus and Kogler both took full advantage of the season's final qualifier race, which don't count toward team scoring but do count for NCAA Championship qualifying and other individual accolades.
Klomhaus becomes the only women's alpine skier this season to win a race in both disciplines and she moved up several spots on the NCAA qualification list for GS, from ninth into the top five. She sat in second place after the first run and used the fourth-fastest second run to secure the victory by 17-hundredths of a second over Colorado's Mikaela Tommy, who had won every women's GS race this season.
She has two race wins this season, also winning the slalom race at the Colorado Invitational on her home hill of Eldora in mid-January. After missing the last two seasons due to injury, she has rebounded with a vengeance and has three podium appearance, five top-five finishes, and six top 10 finishes, all career bests.
Kogler also earned his second win of the season, also winning the giant slalom race at the DU Invitational in Aspen earlier in the season. He's finished eight of 10 races this season and has two wins, three podium appearances, and six top-five finishes while not finishing outside the top 10. He now has four race victories in his career to go with nine podium appearances.
He's the first men's skier to win two GS races and thus moves to the top of the GS list and has clinched no lower than the No. 2 GS seed for the NCAA Championships.
Andrea Komsic finished seventh in the women's race, Eleri Smart finished eighth, Amelia Smart 11th and Katie Hensien 16th for the Pioneers. On the men's side, Jett Seymour finished sixth, brothers Colby Lane and Tristan Lane took 15th and 17th, respectively, Simon Fournier was 18th and Cole Puckett finished 23rd while Nick Santaniello didn't finish.
The following two days will be the NCAA Western Regional Championships starting with the giant slalom on Friday.
