Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 6 Denver Dispatches Colorado College, 5-1

DENVER – The No. 6 Denver Pioneers hockey team (21-9-6, 11-8-5-4) had 12 players register points as it secured 3rd place in the NCHC standings with a 5-1 win against Colorado College on Saturday at Magness Arena. The win landed Denver a meeting with the six-seed Omaha in the NCHC quarterfinal, a best-of-three series to be played in Magness Arena from March 13-15.

Colorado College struck only 4:29 into the first period when Chad Sasaki's looping pass from the defensive zone sent Nick Halloran alone on a breakaway to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. The one-goal lead belied the flow of the game. Denver had outshot the Tigers 14-5 after the first period and would ultimately outshoot them 45-23.

The Pioneers found their production in the second period, scoring on the power play, at even strength and shorthanded to mount a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Emilio Pettersen scored first for Denver at 3:29 of the second as his one timer on Ian Mitchell's pass made it 1-1. Midway through the frame, Michael Davies, who had not scored this season, found the back of the net on Senior Night with a chip over Matt Vernon's shoulder to make it 2-1. Ryan Barrow scored on a shorthanded breakaway four minutes later to extend the Pioneers' lead before the second intermission.

Hank Crone and Cole Guttman scored for Denver to put the game out of reach in the third period. Jack Doremus' rebound set up Crone for a goal at 2:43, then Guttman made it 5-1 on the power play with a backdoor tap-in on Emilio Pettersen's pass at 10:15.

"I liked our effort and urgency throughout the whole night," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "The second period was really good, we possessed a lot of pucks. I thought we were physical tonight, our first layer off the ice was really good. Obviously, we scored a few goals, the power play gets a couple and it was certainly a more comfortable game than last night."

Liam Finlay extended his point streak to six games with one goal and seven assists in the stretch…Ian Mitchell extended his point streak to six games with four goals and three assists in the stretch…Brett Stapley is on a three-game point streak with four assists…Magnus Chrona made 22 saves in his second straight start…Denver went 2/4 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill…
