DENVER - The Denver Pioneers men's tennis team signed Peter Sallay to a National Letter of Intent, head coach
Ricardo Rubio announced on Thursday.
Â
Sallay, 19, is currently ranked 2258 in the ATP singles rankings and 1904 in ATP doubles rankings. In January 2020, his doubles ranking soared as high as 1820. The right-handed Budapest, Hungary native has risen as a force in his home country with rankings as high as #2 at U18, #1 at U16 and #1 at U14. Â
Â
"Adding Peter to our program is a big boost to our team," Rubio said. "Peter has been a Top-2 player in Hungary throughout his junior career, from the U14 to U18 age group. His level of experience is very high, he has sacrificed a lot in his youth to travel internationally and he ranked as high as 154 in the ITF junior world ranking. He has represented Hungary in many junior team competitions growing up and adding a player of this caliber makes our team very strong."
Â
While playing at the U16 level, Sallay was a finalist in 13 events across Europe and a winner at seven: the Sport 2000 TE Junior Tour Krems 2016 in Austria, the 2016 Marin Suica Junior Open in Croatia, the 2016 Batta Cup in Hungary, the 2015 Hungaro Casing Cup in Hungary, the Panaceo 2015 Oberpullendorf Europe Junior Tour in Austria, the Pécs Junior Tennis Cup in Hungary and the 2015 ZABA CUP in Croatia.
Â
"The coaching staff is very excited to have Peter join our team this coming fall and we can't wait to start working with him," Rubio said. "He comes from a great family and we welcome him with open arms".
Â
Sallay is set to join previously signed Charlie Miller and Nicolas Herrero Cuesta as incoming freshmen.

The Pioneers finished the abbreviated 2020 spring season with a
12-1 record and .953 winning percentage, the program's best under Rubio. Denver rose to 35
