DENVER – University of Denver senior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) was named the 2020 Big 12 Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Karr, a business analytics and information major, holds a 3.62 GPA and competed in the all-around in every meet of her career. She earned her third-consecutive Academic All-Big 12 first team honor in 2020 and is a two-time Scholastic All-American.
The DU senior finished the season ranked No. 4 in the nation in the all-around and was ranked in the top 20 on all four events – including in the top five on both vault and bars.
To be eligible for Scholar-Athlete of the Year, student-athletes must be a junior or senior, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and participate in at least 60 percent of the team's competitions. The conference's head coaches vote for the winner and are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Karr is Denver's second Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year since joining the conference in 2016.
Leah Lomonte also captured the award in 2017.
