DENVER – The No. 11 Denver Pioneers hockey team swept its second consecutive weekend series with an 8-0 win over the Air Force Falcons on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
Sophomore
Carter Savoie recorded a career-high six points (three goals, three assists), including his first hat trick at DU, and freshman goaltender
Matt Davis made all 25 saves for the shutout in his first collegiate start. Senior captain
Cole Guttman also recorded a new personal best with four points (one goal, three assists) in the outing.
Forward
Bobby Brink had his second three-point outing of the season with a goal and two assists, while freshman and Colorado Avalanche prospect
Sean Behrens picked up a season-high three assists. Fellow newcomer
Massimo Rizzo tallied twice and now has five goals on the year, tied for first on the team with Savoie.
Denver defeated Air Force 4-1 on Friday night at the Academy to begin the home-and-home set against the in-state foe.
Savoie completed his hat trick at the 9:35 mark of the second period, the fifth fastest to start a game by a Pioneer since the 1999-00 campaign. He recorded each of his markers in a span of 19:26, which was the 11th fastest by a DU skater in that same time period.
After making his NCAA debut late in the third period on opening night against Arizona State on Oct. 8, Davis got the start for the first time following junior
Magnus Chrona's three-game run in net to open the campaign. The Calgary, Alberta, native made 11 saves in the third period on Saturday and denied all three he saw during the penalty kill.
DU led 2-0 after the first period and stretched its lead to five following's Savoie's hat trick in the second period. The Pios added three more tallies in the third frame, which included one from graduate transfer
Cameron Wright. It was Wright's first goal at Denver after spending the previous four years at Bowling Green.
The Pioneers play their next four games on the road, which begins with back-to-back outings at Providence College and Boston College next Friday and Saturday, respectively. DU then plays at North Dakota on Nov. 5-6 before returning to Magness Arena for a two-game set versus Western Michigan on Nov. 12-13.
