DENVER – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Monday that University of Denver sophomore
Carter Savoie has been named the league's forward of the week while freshman
Sean Behrens has been named the defenseman of the week.
This is Savoie's second player of the week honor of his career and his first as the forward of the week. He was named co-rookie of the week last season for the week of Dec. 7-13, 2020. This is Behrens' first collegiate honor.
Savoie recorded seven combined points in two games over the weekend as the Pioneers swept their home-and-home set versus the Air Force Academy—highlighted by a six-point outing on Saturday to set an NCHC record for scoring in a contest. He also finished with a plus-4 rating and two power-play goals in the game.
After tallying in DU's 4-1 win on Friday at the Academy, Savoie produced three goals and three assists on Saturday in an 8-0 win versus the Falcons. Each of the St. Albert, Alberta, native's six points came on the team's first six goals, and his hat trick was Denver's first since Tyler Ward on Feb. 21, 2020 against Miami. The six points are tied for the ninth-most in a game in program history (record is eight).
The left wing leads the entire NCHC in scoring this season with 11 points while he ranks tied for first in the conference in goals (five) and assists (six). Savoie, who is also on a four-game point streak, is second in scoring nationally but leads the NCAA with 2.75 points per game.
Savoie is the first Denver player to be named forward of the week since
Cole Guttman for Feb. 17-23, 2020.
Behrens totaled four assists while adding four shots on goal, four blocked shots and a plus-3 rating in two games versus the Falcons.
Following a helper on Friday, Behrens had three assists in Saturday's matchup against Air Force, which included two primary helpers and two on the power play. The Barrington, Illinois, native is now on a four-game assist/point streak to begin his collegiate career.
Behrens' six points (all assists) on the year lead all NCHC defensemen and rank tied for sixth among all conference skaters. Nationally, he ranks tied for second in scoring by a blueliner.
He is the first Pioneer to be named defenseman of the week since Ian Mitchell for Feb. 17-23, 2020.
This is DU's second and third weekly honors of the season after forward
Massimo Rizzo was named Co-Rookie of the Week last Monday.
The conference named Omaha's Isaiah Saville its goaltender of the week while St. Cloud State's Jack Peart earned rookie of the week honors.
