DENVER – The University of Denver men's lacrosse program will host eight regular season home games, including 2018 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Champion Yale, at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in 2022, head coach
Bill Tierney announced with the remainder of his schedule on Thursday.
Non-Conference
The Pioneers will welcome Johns Hopkins to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for an exhibition on January 29 to kickstart the 2022 campaign.
Denver will then make its first trip to Salt Lake City to take on Utah in the regular season opener on February 5 before returning to the Mile High City on February 12 to host Air Force. The Pioneers won the previous two match-ups at Peter Barton, a 15-6 win in 2019 and a 9-8 win in January. Denver is 23-2 in its Division I era against Air Force, having won each of the last 14 meetings.
The Pioneers will head to the state of North Carolina for the first of two times in the campaign to take on Duke on February 19. DU will later return to take on UNC on March 5. In-between the pair of ACC trips, the Pioneers will host Jacksonville and Canisius on back-to-back days February 26-27. Denver is 6-9 against Duke, including 1-6 in Durham, and 7-12 against North Carolina, including 4-7 in Chapel Hill.
Denver's marquee non-conference home clash sees the Pioneers host Yale on Sunday, March 13. The Pioneers and Bulldogs will meet for the second time in Denver's Division I history, with Yale earning an overtime win in New Haven in 2005.
The Pioneers will make their third attempt to get to Columbus for a non-conference game since the Buckeyes visited Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in 2018. Denver's flight in 2019 was canceled due to a bomb cyclone snow storm that hit the Denver area the night before the Pioneers scheduled departure. In 2020, Denver's trip was abruptly halted with the cancellation of the remainder of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Big Ten did not play non-conference contests in 2021, so after meeting every one of Denver's Division I seasons between 1999-2018, the two programs will attempt to meet again on March 19.
Denver's non-conference finale will see Towson visit Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on March 26. The Pioneers and Tigers have split their previous eight meetings, with the Pioneers taking four of the last five.
BIG EAST Play
The Pioneers will open BIG EAST play at home on April 2
nd when Georgetown visits PBLS. The Pioneers will then go to Villanova (April 9) before returning home to host St. John's the following weekend (April 16). After a trip to Providence on April 23, the Pioneers will close out the regular season with Marquette on Friday, April 29 at Peter Barton.
