DENVER – The No. 14 University of Denver hockey team opened a four-game homestand on Friday night by picking up a 5-3 victory against the No. 9 Western Michigan Broncos at Magness Arena.
The win ended a four-game losing streak for the Pioneers (5-4-0, 1-2-0 NCHC), while also keeping the team undefeated on home ice (4-0-0) this season.
Denver sophomore forward
Carter Savoie scored twice and added an assist, while freshman
Carter Mazur recorded a new career high with three points, tallying and picking up two helpers. Fellow freshman
Massimo Rizzo and senior
Cameron Wright also found the back of the net, while goaltender
Magnus Chrona stopped 19-of-22 shots.
Western Michigan led 2-1 after the first period, as Drew Worrand put the Broncos (6-3-0, 1-2-0 NCHC) ahead just 52 seconds before the break. Wright tied the game earlier in the frame after Michael Joyce opened the game's scoring 43 seconds after puck drop.
DU changed the momentum in the second period, scoring three goals in the stanza, including ones by Savoie and Rizzo in the first 2:24 to flip a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead. Mazur recorded his third point with a tally at 7:31 during a Denver power play, which went a perfect 2-for-2.
Josh Passolt scored for the Broncos on the man advantage as well before the second intermission, but that was the last shot to get past Chrona.
Savoie tallied his second of the game and the Pios' second on the power play at 10:27 of the third period.
Denver went 2-for-3 on the penalty kill and outshot WMU 41-22 in the game. The teams wrap up their weekend series on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Magness Arena.
