Ezeudu’s 17-and-17 Lead Denver Past Missouri S&T

The Pioneers closed out strong in nine point win in home opener

DENVER  – Junior forward Uju Ezeudu and senior guard Anna Jackson finished with 17 points apiece, two of four Pioneers in double figures in a 70-61 Denver win over Missouri S&T on Friday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium.
 
Inside The Box Score:
Ezeudu finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds for her eighth career double-double. The Denver junior had seven of Denver's 15 offensive rebounds on the afternoon, an overall rebounding battle Denver won 48-38. Ezeudu also had four steals, two assists, two blocks and just one turnover in the victory.
 
Jackson finished with 17 on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 behind the arc.
 
Meghan Boyd and Indeya Sanders rounded out the Pioneers' double figure scorers with 10 apiece. Sanders finished with a game-high seven assists against just two turnovers, and added four rebounds, a steal and two blocked shots. Tess Santos (+16) and Boyd (+15) led the Pioneers in +/- on the afternoon.


 
First Quarter:
Denver was 0-for-12 from the field heading to the first media timeout as the visitors held a 4-0 lead with 4:52 to go in the first, but the Pioneers picked it up in the second half of the quarter, going five for its next 12 to take a 13-10 lead at the first quarter break.
 
After being outrebounded at Air Force on Tuesday, the Pioneers hit the offensive glass themselves in the first quarter, getting eight of its misses back in the opening 10 minutes.
 
Boyd led Denver with five in the first quarter, including Denver's first triple of the afternoon. A quartet of other Pioneers had a pair in the first.
 
Second Quarter:
The teams traded the lead in the second quarter with the Miners edging the Pioneers 20-15 in the period. Ezeudu had all eight of her first half points in the second frame, shooting 2-for-2 from the field and going 4-for-4 from the foul line.
 
Jackson knocked down a couple threes in the middle of the quarter for six of her eight first half points. Both Jackson triples were assisted by Boyd.
 
Ezeudu had 11 rebounds in the first half, three off her overall career-high and capping her 10th career double digit rebounding performance.
 
Third Quarter
The two teams split the 34 points in the third quarter at 17-17 to keep the Miners two points ahead heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
Ezeudu took just over a minute into the third to drive to the hole and complete her eighth career double-double, after recording two a season ago.
 
Denver spread the scoring around in the quarter. Sanders had five to lead the Pios in the quarter. Ezeudu and Makayla Minett had four apiece. Minett also added four rebounds in the quarter to bring her total in the game up to eight.
 
Fourth Quarter:
Denver put up 25 points in the fourth quarter to not only take the lead but extend it to as many as nine with a minute to go. Sanders had an impressive fourth with four points and four assists, setting up both of Denver's fourth-quarter three-pointers.
 
Ezeudu had five points and five boards to end her 17-and-17 afternoon. Jackson led the Pioneers in the quarter with seven and Boyd added another five.
 
Notes:
  • Ezeudu finished with her eighth career double-double
    • Ezeudu finished in double figures in rebounding for the first time this season and the 10th time in her career.
      • Ezeudu's 17 rebounds is tied for fifth in Denver's Division I history on its single-game chart.
      • Ezeudu's previous career-high in rebounds was 14, set at Western Illinois (01/12/20).
    • Ezeudu finished in double figures in points for the fourth-straight game and the 36th time in her career.
  • Jackson finished with double figures for the 12th time in her career
  • Boyd finished in double figures for the fifth-straight game and the 29th time in her career.
  • Sanders finished in double figures for the 21st time in her career.
  • Sanders 7 assists marks the 23rd game in her career the point guard has finished with at least five.
  • Minett tied her career-high with 11 rebounds (2/8/20 at Florida A&M)

The Pioneers will continue their five game homestand on Monday night when Denver welcomes its first of two American Athletic Conference foes in the homestand in Wichita State. Tip is set for 7 p.m. MT, and will be stream on Pioneer All-Access.
