No. 12 Denver Beats ASU 7-1 to Sweep Season Series

Pioneers hockey outscores Sun Devils 13-3 over the weekend

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 12 Denver Pioneers hockey team stretched its winning streak to six games on Saturday with a 7-1 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils at Oceanside Ice Arena.

Massimo Rizzo led Denver with two goals, Sean Behrens tallied his first collegiate marker and goaltender Magnus Chrona made 34 saves. Bobby Brink, Cole Guttman, Carter Mazur and Brett Stapley also found the back of the net for DU.

The Pioneers (10-4-0, 4-2-0 NCHC) won all four matchups against the Sun Devils (7-9-0) this year after also sweeping the season-opening series on Oct. 8-9 at Magness Arena. This is the first time that DU has played a non-conference opponent four times in a campaign since also doing it against U.S. International University (San Diego, California) in 1983-84.

Denver led 2-0 after the first period on markers from Guttman and Rizzo and extended the advantage to three after Brett Stapley's fourth goal of the weekend went top shelf with 4:47 remaining in the middle frame. Stapley, who also had an assist on Saturday, recorded his first career hat trick on Friday and finished the two-game set in Arizona with six points (four goals, two assists).

The Pioneers stretched their lead to 5-0 earlier in the third period as Mazur and Brink found the back of the net in the first 3:18 of stanza, and Behrens and Rizzo added power-play tallies in the final five minutes of regulation. The Pios outscored Arizona State 13-3 over the weekend and improved to 6-1-1 in the all-time series.

Denver returns to NCHC play and continues its four-game road trip next weekend with a set at Minnesota Duluth.
