Three Pioneers Earn NCHC Player of the Week Awards

Brett Stapley (Forward), Magnus Chrona (Goaltender) and Jack Devine (Rookie) honored

DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team won three NCHC Player of the Week awards on Monday, as senior Brett Stapley was named Forward of the Week, junior Magnus Chrona was named Goaltender of the Week and freshman Jack Devine was named Rookie of the Week.

This is the second time this season that an NCHC team earned three of the four weekly conference awards, with Western Michigan also doing it for the week of Nov. 15-21.

Stapley led the Pioneers with six points (4g/2a) last weekend in the two-game sweep of the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Campbell River, British Columbia, native recorded a career-high four points (3g/1a) and tallied his first career hat trick on Friday. He followed up that performance with another two points on Saturday, scoring his sixth goal of the season and adding an assist as well.

This is Stapley's first NCHC Forward of the Week award and his third career NCHC weekly honor, as he twice earned Rookie of the Week as a freshman in 2018-19. He is the second DU player to be named Forward of the Week this season, joining Carter Savoie, who has already done it twice (Oct. 18, Nov. 15).

Chrona picked up his second-ever Goaltender of the Week award (March 1, 2021) and his third NCHC weekly honor of his career after also being named Rookie of the Week as a freshman (March 9, 2020). The Stockholm, Sweden, native stopped 65-of-68 shots against the Sun Devils over the weekend and posted season-high saves each night, making 31 on Friday and 34 on Saturday.

The goalie has started eight consecutive games for Denver and is on a six-game winning streak, one shy of matching his career long. He owns a 9-3-0 record and a .909 save percentage this season. This is the first goalie of the week award that the Pios have won this year, and Chrona was the last recipient of the honor on March 1, 2021.

Devine recorded back-to-back multi-point games versus ASU, recording his first collegiate goal and adding an assist on Friday and then contributing two helpers in Saturday's 7-1 victory. Three of his four points came at even strength, and the Glencoe, Illinois, native closed the series with six total shots and a plus-3 rating.

This is Devine's first NCHC honor and the third time this season that a Pioneer has been named Rookie of the Week. Massimo Rizzo shared the award on Oct. 11 and Carter Mazur was the lone recipient of the honor on Nov. 15.

Freshman Sean Behrens was a finalist for Defenseman of the Week, which was given to St. Cloud State's Nick Perbix.

UP NEXT: The No. 11-ranked Pioneers wrap up a four-game road swing with a two-game set at No. 5 Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday in their final contests before the holiday break.
