Black History Month Profile: Derrick Fuller

A look at the post-graduate success of former Pioneer men’s basketball player Derrick Fuller

DENVER
During the month of February, the University of Denver Division of Athletics and Recreation will catch up with eight former black student-athletes, featuring their successes after graduation.

Former Pioneer men's basketball player Derrick Fuller graduated from the University of Denver in June of 1992. In his final season with the Crimson and Gold, Fuller averaged 8.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 29 games, including a season-high 20 points against Metro State. Fuller also dished out a senior-season best 13 assists against Dordt College.

Now a banking veteran of over 25 years, Fuller worked his way up the ladder with Wells Fargo and Company's, Aurora District, currently serving as the Senior VP and Regional Bank District Manager. Fuller's banking district manages an asset size of over $500 million in deposits and loans.

A member of the inaugural class of the Model Man of Distinction Award, Fuller thrives in his passion for youth financial education and his hope for developing a stronger understanding of financial literacy in future generations. Fuller co-authored the Sisters in Service Literacy Program curriculum currently in use to help solve the financial illiteracy problem that in his words is "plaguing our community".

"By constructing a firm foundation and showing both positive and negative aspects of finance, we are able to educate our youth to be, well informed, clever, wealthy and productive members of our community," Fuller's employee bio reads.

A "Young Leader to Watch" in Colorado, Fuller continues to find ways to give back to his community, serving on community boards such as the YMCA, The Urban League, Open Door Youth Ministry and was appointed by Mayor Michael B. Hancock to serve on the Career Service Board for the City of Denver. He currently continues to serve on the Aurora Public School foundation.
