Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Pioneers Pump Tigers, 5-1

Colorado Springs, Colo.  – The Denver Pioneers hockey team used a five-goal second period to defeat the Colorado College Tigers 5-1 on Thursday at the Broadmoor World Arena.

Turning Point
The five-goal second period. The last time Denver scored five goals in a period was on January 13, 2012 vs. Bemidji State.

Quotable
"We were able to execute offensively. We bore down on our chances and were able to put some pucks in the back of the net. It was really nice to see" - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle

First Period
The Tigers started offensively inclined with three shots off the post and 13 on target in the first period. The Pioneers managed only nine shots, forced to rely on Magnus Chrona to keep them in the game. And he did. Of Chrona's early saves, he made one of his largest with 10:30 left in the frame as he denied Brian Hawkinson's spin & turn alone at the net with his outstretched left pad.

Second Period
Ryan Barrow served the remainder of his tripping penalty before exiting the penalty box to make it 1-0 only 57 seconds into the period. As Barrow joined the play and gained the zone, his pass intended for Kohen Olischefski glanced off the stick of Ben Copeland who was diving to defend the play. Three minutes later, Cole Guttman received a low-to-high pass from Slava Demin to make it 2-0. It was 3-0 by 6:32 with Antti Tuomsito entering the zone, shoveling a pass to Olischefski and camping at the net for a soft rebound. Olischefski's goal came next as Guttman swept around the net before finding the Pioneer captain at 15:56. Justin Lee's shot from the point made it 5-0 with 1:22 left in the period.

Third Period
Hawkinson ruined Denver's shutout bid at 13:53 of the third period with a short-side wrist shot from the right circle. That goal was the lone blip in the Pioneers' game as the Crimson & Gold rolled to victory.
