Omaha Rallies to Defeat Denver

Boyd with a game-high 24 points

DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team couldn't hold off Omaha in the fourth quarter on Saturday, falling 80-75 in Hamilton Gymnasium.
 
Inside the Box Score:
  • Meghan Boyd led the way with a game-high 24 points.
  • Claire Gritt wrapped up her home career with 20 points and five rebounds.
  • Tsimba Malonga added 13 points.
  • The Mavericks were led by a team-high 24 points from Elena Pilakouta.
Significant Stats:
  • Denver knocked down 11 3s.
  • Pioneers finished with four players in double figures.
  • DU dropped to 5-3 when leading at the half this year.
Turning Point:
A 28-14 fourth quarter from the Mavericks to come back and pick up the win.
 
As it Happened:

First Quarter:
For a second straight day, the opening 10 minutes was an offensive explosion between the two teams. Denver simply couldn't be stopped from beyond the arc, going 6-for-10 in the quarter from deep, resulting in a 27-20 advantage.
Second Quarter:

 Evenly-fought second quarter kept Denver in the lead by half, 44-38. Omaha was able get some easy baskets around the rim, resulting in a 57.1 shooting percentage for the quarter. The Pioneers were able to keep doing damage from distance, drilling three triples in the 10-minute stretch.

Third Quarter:
Each team cooled off in the second half, but Denver kept its foot on the gas in terms of pace, creating multiple chances on the break and at the line. Pioneers won the quarter, 17-14.

Fourth Quarter:
Omaha made its move to get back in this one in the first five minutes of the fourth with a 12-6 run to cut the DU lead to one at 67-66, forcing them to take a timeout. The Mavericks were able to take their first lead since 7-6 after a layup from Sophie Johnston made it 73-71. Omaha never looked back the rest of the way.

Up Next:
Denver (7-15, 5-9 Summit League) heads off to Sioux Falls for the Summit League Championship next weekend in Sioux Falls, S.D.
