Pioneers Pick Up Gutsy OT Win against Fighting Hawks

DU picks up big win despite having only six players available

DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team, despite being undermanned, battled hard for 45 minutes, picking up a big overtime victory against North Dakota on Friday, 86-79 in Hamilton Gymnasium.

Inside the Box Score:
  • Meghan Boyd powered the Pioneers with 27 points and seven rebounds.
  • Uju Ezeudu recorded her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds
  • Anna Jackson came up big from deep, finishing with 19 points, making five 3s in the win.
  • Julie Fleecs led the Fighting Hawks with a team-high 22 points and 16 rebounds.
Significant Stats:
  • Denver had only six players available to play on the afternoon.
  • The Crimson and Gold tied a season high with 12 made 3s in the contest, third time this year with that many.
Turning Point:
A 13-4 run from the Pioneers late in the fourth quarter to go from down nine to a tie at 74-74 after a 3 Jackson with 1:08 left in regulation.
 
As it Happened:
First Quarter:

UND jumped out to a 16-12 lead through 10 minutes due to Denver going cold to start, highlighted by a 4-for-20 shooting performance in the quarter. Boyd was a bright spot, scoring seven in the quarter, with both made shots coming from deep.
 
Second Quarter:
Powered by a big defensive effort, the Pioneers took control in the second, outscoring the Fighting Hawks 19-11. UND was forced into tough shoots all quarter, going 4-for-23 from the field. Boyd again found her rhythm on the offensive side of the floor, scoring 10 in the quarter as DU took a 31-27 lead into the break.
 
Third Quarter:
North Dakota made a statement to start the second half, erupting for 29 points to take a 56-50 lead by the end of the quarter. The Fighting Hawks high-powered quarter was the result of some hot shooting, going 10-for-18 in the frame.

Fourth Quarter:
Pioneers stepped up in a big way in the fourth, ripping off 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting to force this game into overtime at 74-74.

Overtime:
DU pulled away in the extra period, outscoring UND 12-5. The Pioneers were able to take advantage of getting the line and converting, finishing the extra time 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Up Next:
Denver (5-10, 3-4 Summit League) wraps up the two-game series with North Dakota on Saturday with game two. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. MT.
