DENVER – The [10/10] University of Denver men's lacrosse team got 12 saves from sophomore
Jack Thompson and 4+ point days from
Jack Hannah,
Ethan Walker and
Jackson Morrill to knock off [4/4] Georgetown 13-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was delayed to Tuesday due to the winter storm that hit Denver over the weekend.
Inside the Box Score:
Thompson's save splits were 3-4-1-4 in the contest to backstop a Pioneers defense that turned up the physicality for the Tuesday matinee and limited Georgetown to no more than two goals in any quarter.
Hannah had four goals to lead all scorers, Walker added three goals and two assists and Morrill quarterbacked Denver's attack with four helpers.
Alex Simmons rounded out Denver's multi goal scorers with three points on two goals and an assist.
Denver's short stick middies
Danny Logan and
Kyle Smith had two caused turnovers apiece, and Logan added a goal off the faceoff to start the second quarter.
First Quarter:
Georgetown scored on its first two possessions to race out to a 2-0 lead in the first 1:25. The Pioneers didn't allow the run to get to 3-0, and then went on a run of their own, scoring the next seven of the game.
Sam Dwinell finished a Walker feed to make it 2-1 Georgetown. Hannah converted a Denver man-up chance to tie things at 2-2 with 4:37 to go in the opening stanza. It was the 2020 Inside Lacrosse All-American Hannah that got the next goal as well, netting his 17
th of the season 90 seconds later to give Denver its first lead of the day.
Second Quarter:
Danny Logan scored off the first faceoff of the second quarter to double Denver's lead.
Lucas Cotler got his name on the scoresheet with 10:02 to go and then Hannah completed his first half hat trick to stretch the lead to 6-2.
Ted Sullivan went through the spin cycle and netted his first of the day and his fifth of the season to cap off the 7-0 run. Georgetown answered with two quick goals to make it 7-4 Denver with 5:12 to play in the first half.
The Pioneers earned a late reset in the half and called timeout to hold for the last shot with 1:09 to go. Out of the timeout, Walker made a cross-field feed to Simmons to end the half on a high note for the Crimson and Gold and get the lead to 8-4.
Third Quarter:
Georgetown got on the board first to start the second half with Declan McDermott's seventh of the year. Denver's defense held the Hoyas scoreless for the next 20 minutes of action. Hannah got his fourth of the day, Simmons got his 15
th of the year and Walker got his first of three second half goals to round out the scoring in the third quarter and send Denver into the final 15 minutes with an 11-5 lead.
Fourth Quarter:
The Hoyas once again started the quarter strong, scoring the first two of the quarter to cut the Denver lead back to four at 11-7 with 8:35 to play.
Walker concluded Tuesday's scoring with his 17
th and 18
th goals of the season to complete his hat trick to round out Denver's six-goal margin.
Significant Stats:
- Jackson Morrill stretched his point streak to 64 games, ranking second nationally in the active streak.
- Denver improved to 101-6 under head coach Bill Tierney when holding opponents to single digits.
- Denver is now 105-21 at Peter Barton (built in 2005), including 74-12 under Tierney.
- The Pioneers improved to 65-75 in their DI history against ranked opponents, including 54-36 under Tierney and 27-27 against top-10 teams under Tierney.
- With five points on the day, Ethan Walker pulled to within six points of Wes Berg's career point total of 255 for the Denver Division I record.
