Denver Completes Sweep at Kansas City

Ohira’s third of the season proves the difference in Denver’s fourth win of the campaign

KANSAS CITY – The University of Denver men's soccer team defeated Kansas City 1-0 on Saturday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium. DU's defense didn't allow a shot on goal for the 18th time in its Division I history.

First Half:
Denver dominated possession and had the better of the chances in the opening 45 minutes. Denver had eight of the 10 shots, recorded the only four shots on goal and took three of the five corner kicks in the first half.

In the sixth minute, Jacob Stensson got free, nearly putting away his third goal of the weekend, but the ball rolled up his boot and flew over the bar. Stefan DeLeone got in behind the Kansas City defense in the 22nd minute, but goalkeeper Cooper Clark read it well and came off his line nicely.

Denver's possession paid off on the scoreboard in the 31st minute when Kengo Ohira ripped his third goal of the season and the sixth of his career from outside the box. Stensson turned and faced the Kansas City defense just inside his attacking half, sliding it to Ohira on the left. Ohira took several touches, cut it a few yards to the right and smashed his shot into the upper-90 and off the inside of the back far post.

The assist for Stensson was his second of the season and the 16th of his career.

Second Half:
Denver executed its tactics to the letter in the second half, outshooting the home side 4-3, but continuing to limit Kansas City without a shot on goal.

Significant Stats:
-          Stensson's assist on Ohira's opener in the first half moved him into a tie fifth in Denver's Division I career record book. Stensson's 16 career assists match Jarod Stigall's (2008-11) career mark.

Up Next:
Denver will have next weekend off before heading to Eastern Illinois for a two-match set April 1 and 3. Kickoff on April 1st is set for 12 p.m. MT.
