DENVER – The [-/RV] University of Denver women's soccer team broke a 0-0 score line in the middle of the second half to take the Pioneers to seven wins on the spin after a 1-0 victory over North Dakota State on Friday evening at the Diane Wendt Sports Complex.
First Half:
Denver had 64% possession in the opening 45 minutes but couldn't find the breakthrough in the first half. The Pioneers outshot the visitors 3-1, putting two of their three chances on goal. Denver also took both corner kicks in the first half.
DU's best chance to score in the first came off the head of
Natalie Beckman, but the service was just behind her forcing the ball over the crossbar.
Second Half:
The Pioneers continued to dominate play in the second half, outshooting North Dakota State 11-0 in the second 45 to bring the total to 14-1 in the match.
Denver broke the deadlock in the 63
rd minute on a Beckman corner kick that connected with the head of
Sami Feller for Feller's fourth goal of the season and the 21
st of her career. Beckman's assist was her seventh of the campaign and the 22
nd of her career.
Significant Stats:
Denver held North Dakota State without a shot on goal, the third time the Pioneers have held their opponent to zero shots on goal this season. It is the 26
th time in Denver's DI history that the Pioneers have held their opponent without a shot on goal (26-0-0).
The Pioneers also limited North Dakota State to one total shot, a season low for Denver's defense this year. Denver has held its opponent to zero shots just once in its DI history, on October, 22, 2006 in a 5-0 win over Western Kentucky.
Denver has taken the last 26 corner kicks awarded in its last three matches.
Feller's 21
st career goal moved her into 12
th in Denver's DI history in goals, two behind
Kristin Warren and
Kalie Vaughn for 10
th. Feller's ninth game-winning goal is good for eighth in that category in Denver's DI history.
Beckman's 22
nd career assist ties her with
Kaitlin Bast for seventh in Denver's DI history.
