COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The [45] University of Denver men's tennis team got the doubles point, but fell to [27] Oklahoma 4-1 in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament on Friday morning at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Doubles:
After Oklahoma secured the first decided doubles match on the No. 2 court, Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and Ignacio Rivero Crespo wrapped up their sixth-straight doubles victory by a count of 6-2 on the No. 3 court.
At the time that match finished, James Davis and Matt Summers were down a break at 5-3. Davis held serve to make it 5-4, before the duo broke back to make it 5-all late in the set. Summers consolidated the break to make it 6-5, and then the Sooners sent it to a tiebreaker. On their first set point of the day, Davis smashed an overhead to secure the No. 1 court and the doubles point. The win for Davis and Summers was their sixth-straight, improving the duo to 15-5 together this season.
Singles:
The Pioneers kept most of the singles matches tight, but were unable to get another point on the board as the Sooners got wins on courts two, four, five and six to take the match. Davis won the first set 6-1 and had a 4-2 third-set lead on court one. Summers was also in a third set on court three.
Significant Stats
- Denver's appearance this weekend is its eighth Division I NCAA Tournament in program history.
- The Pioneers entered the tournament having won eight straight matches and 16 of their last 17.
Up Next: James Davis will represent the program in the 2021 NCAA Men's Singles Championships, May 23-28 in Orlando, Fla. The draw will be released at a later date.
