[7/7] Denver Falls to [8/8] Georgetown 10-9 in BIG EAST Title Game

The Pioneers await Sunday night’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show set for 7 p.m. MT on ESPNU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The [7/7] University of Denver men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 game to [8/8] Georgetown in the BIG EAST Final on Saturday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
 
Inside the Box Score:
Jackson Morrill led Denver's offense with four points on two goals and two assists. Ethan Walker got on the scoresheet two more times after a seven-point day on Thursday. Danny Logan picked up a defensive team-high (non-faceoff guys) three ground balls. Jack Thompson finished with 10 saves against 10 goals allowed.
 
At the faceoff dot, Alec Stathakis finished 9-for-12 with seven ground balls, while TD Ierlan went 6-for-11 with two ground balls of his own.

First Quarter:
Georgetown got two goals in the first 2:18 from Declan McDermott and Dylan Watson to give the Hoyas an early 2-0 lead. Denver responded with three-straight, including two to end the first quarter scoring. Lucas Cotler converted a feed from former Yale teammate Morrill and Malik Sparrow sent a rocket off the post and in to tie things at 2-2 with 2:33 to go in the opening quarter.
 
Second Quarter:
The Pioneers scored four of the six goals in the second quarter, capping off its 3-0 run with Alex Simmons' 31st of the season to start the scoring in the stanza. Georgetown responded with two-straight in a five-minute span to retake the lead at 4-3 with 7:56 to play in the first half.
 
Denver ended the half on a 3-0 run. Morrill scored his 29th of the campaign with 6:37 to go to tie things back up at 4-4. Jack Hannah went around the world to make it 5-4 with 4:04 to play and Ellis Geis spun his defender around 63 seconds later to make it 6-4 Pios with 3:01 to play in the half.
 
Owen McElroy made six stops, including late clock stops in both of the first two quarters. Jack Thompson responded from the two early Georgetown goals with five saves in the rest of the half.
 
Third Quarter
Walker got on the scoresheet with 12:28 to go in the third to push Denver's lead to three for the first time on Saturday afternoon at 7-4. Both goalies continued to make saves before Jake Carraway ended the Hoyas scoring drought to make it 7-5 Denver with 9:41 to go. After a 15 second scrum at midfield gave the ball to the Hoyas on a clearing the clock violation, Watson got the Hoyas second-straight goal to cut DU's lead back down to one at 7-6 with 3:11 to play in the quarter.
 
Following a media timeout, Morrill pushed the lead back to two at 8-6 with 2:06 to play in the quarter, closing out the scoring in the period.
 
Fourth Quarter
Georgetown outscored Denver 4-1 in the fourth quarter to claim the BIG EAST Championship. Petkevich made it 8-7, McDermott tied things at 8-8 and Dylan Hess gave Georgetown its first lead of the second half at 9-8 with 7:55 to go. Walker tied things back up at 9-9 on a feed from Cotler with 6:39 to go. Hess had the game-winner with four minutes to play, and the Pioneers weren't able to level things again sending the Hoyas to a 10-9 win.
