DENVER – The University of Denver Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations
Karlton Creech announced the hiring of
Rogan Brown as the Nordic Skiing Head Coach on Wednesday.
Brown had been serving as the interim head coach since April. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach in 2020. Brown looks to continue to add to the rich history the Pioneers have in the sport, highlighted by 24 National Championships, most by any team in the country.
"I could not be more thrilled to have the opportunity to build on the Pioneers' legacy of 24 national championships," Brown said. "To me, David Stewart, who first brought me to DU and led the team to six NCAA Championship titles exemplifies what it means to coach this team. I am extremely excited to work with the talented squad that Toni Roponen put together over the last couple of years.
"DU Skiing has always been a program that shines when it matters most, where athletes excel academically and athletically. I will strive to continue on this path and support our athletes in achieving their own goals and work with them towards our next national championship title. I want to thank
Karlton Creech for his support of the ski team and our athletes through a challenging year, and his trust in me to lead this team going forward."
In his first season as an assistant for the Pioneers in 2020, Brown helped lead Denver to the RMISA Championship and three other top-five finishes before the season was cut short prior to the end of the NCAA Championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A former professional Nordic skier, Brown joined Denver after 13 months in Bozeman, Mont., where he worked as the head coach for both the elite and postgraduate Nordic team with the Bridger Ski Foundation. In his collegiate racing career, Brown earned Second Team All-America honors in 2015, finishing ninth in freestyle and sixth at the U.S. National Championships later that season. In his professional career, Brown finished seventh in two races at the 2017 U.S. National Championships (15k, 30k) and fourth in 2018 (15km). Brown's return to the program comes following the departure of Nordic head coach
Toni Roponen, who left the program to return to his home country of Finland to be with his family.
