DENVER - University of Denver men's basketball head coach
Jeff Wulbrun announced the signing of
Tevin Smith on Friday. The incoming freshman has signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) to continue his academic and athletic career with the Pioneers.
The 6-foot-5 athletic guard from Danville, Ill. will join DU after spending last year at Danville High School, where he was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year after averaging 20.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. Smith was selected by the Associated Press to the Illinois All-State Second Team.
Smith's signing marks a big get for DU, with the incoming freshman being rated as three-star recruit and the highest-rated player ever to sign with the Crimson and Gold out of high school according to 247 sports. He is ranked as the No. 2 small forward and No. 8 overall player in the state of Illinois.
"We are thrilled with the addition of Tevin Smith to our basketball program at DU," Wulbrun said. "We are adding an elite-level athlete who can score on all three levels. He has good size and length for a perimeter player and has the potential to be a lockdown defender. I love his selfless attitude, willingness to make plays for his teammates and his understanding of what the team needs in pivotal situations.
"In Tevin, we're adding another elite-level student to the program, who pursues excellence in all of his endeavors. He's a great fit for our culture and the academic mission of the university."
Smith garnered interest from programs around the country, receiving scholarship offers from Bradley, Cal State Fullerton, DePaul, Miami (Ohio), Oregon, Tennessee-Martin, Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
"My staff has done an incredible job with their recruiting efforts since our arrival, and put our program in position to get our fan base excited and enthusiastic about the immediate future of Denver Basketball," Wulbrun said.
Prior to playing at Danville last season, Smith played at the United States Basketball Academy, a prep school in Blue River, Oregon due to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) not having basketball in the winter due to COVID-19 restrictions. While there, Smith was still enrolled at Danville, taking online classes.
Denver has started its offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
