Three Pioneers Named Nominees for Hobey Baker Award

DU hockey's top line of Bobby Brink, Cole Guttman and Carter Savoie up for college hockey's top honor

DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team has three players up for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award as senior Cole Guttman, junior Bobby Brink and sophomore Carter Savoie were announced as nominees for college hockey's top player honor on Wednesday.

The three Pioneers are among 77 men's hockey players up for the award, with the initial selection being a fan vote that runs from now until Sunday, March 6 at midnight. College hockey fans can cast their vote by going to https://www.hobeybaker.com/vote.

Phase two of fan balloting will come from the list of the Hobey Baker's top 10 finalists and begins March 17 and closes March 27. The fans' vote accounts for a full one percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year's award recipient.

The 2022 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 8, 2022 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championship in Boston. The award ceremony will be broadcast nationally on NHL Network and streamed live at hobeybaker.com.

Guttman is fifth on the team with 20 points after 18 games this year and ranks second on the squad with 15 assists. It is the fourth consecutive season that he has recorded 20 or more points. The DU captain, who has also tallied five goals, leads the team with 390 faceoffs taken and is among the top faceoff centers in the country with a 59.2-percent success rate.

Brink leads Denver is assists (19) and points (26) this season, already setting career highs in both categories. In addition to contributing seven goals, he has recorded multiple points in nine contests, which included going on a career-long, seven-game point streak from Nov. 12 to Dec. 10.

Savoie has been Denver's leading point-getter and goal scorer for much of the season, as he has 22 points in 16 games this year. The winger has set new personal bests in assists (10) and points this year and leads Denver with 12 goals, one shy of matching the mark from his freshman campaign last year. He ranks tied for third in the nation in goals per game, while his 22 points are the most among all NCAA players that have played 16 games or less.

The University of Denver has had two previous recipients of the Hobey Baker Award, as Matt Carle won the award in 2006 and Will Butcher was honored in 2017.

Award criteria include candidates exhibiting the exceptional character traits of the award's namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America's greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.
