DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team fell to South Dakota State 87-43 on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium.
Inside the Box Score:
Uju Ezeudu finished in double figures for the 50
th time in the 70
th career game of her three-year Pioneer career. Ezeudu added six rebounds, two steals and two blocks, and drew eight fouls.
Indeya Sanders added nine points and
Emily Counsel finished with eight.
First Quarter:
After an even opening three minutes that included an
Anna Jackson triple, South Dakota State ripped off an 8-0 run in a 2:34 span to take a 14-6 lead into the media timeout.
SDSU stretched that scoring run to 16-0 on the other side of the media timeout to continue to build upon its first-quarter advantage. Sanders hit a triple to end the first quarter scoring and snap the Pioneers field-goal drought. Sanders led the Pioneers with five in the first quarter to cut the Jackrabbits lead down to 22-10 through 10 minutes of play.
Second Quarter:
Sanders trimmed the Jackrabbits lead once again with a jumper right out of the quarter break to push her point total to seven just after the midway point of the first half. A 9-2 SDSU spurt in the middle of the quarter extended the Jackrabbits advantage to 17 with 5:06 to play in the first half.
SDSU's lead was pushed to 27 at the intermission. Sanders led the Pioneers with nine points in the opening 20 minutes on 4-of-5 shooting. Myah Selland led the Jackrabbits with 11, one of four players to score at least eight points in the first half.
Third Quarter:
The Jacks opened the third quarter on a 15-2 run that included their first three, three-pointers of the game to extend the advantage to 63-23 at the media timeout.
Counsel had five-straight points off the bench for the Pioneers in the middle of the quarter, and Ezeudu added four to bring her total to eight heading into the final 10 minutes. South Dakota State took a 77-31 lead into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
Denver outscored South Dakota State 12-10 in the final quarter, led by five from Ezeudu and three more from Counsel.
Notes:
- Uju Ezeudu finished in double figures for the second-straight game, the 16th time this season and the 50th time in her career.
What's Next:
Denver will be back in action on Tuesday night inside Hamilton Gymnasium when the Pioneers welcome Kansas City. Tip is set for 7 p.m. MT.
