No. 6 Denver Shuts Out No. 15 Omaha 4-0

Goaltender Magnus Chrona makes 31 saves as Pioneers sweep series

DENVER – Goaltender Magnus Chrona stopped all 31 shots he faced, and the No. 6 University of Denver hockey team used three power-play goals to defeat the No. 15 Omaha Mavericks 4-0 on Sunday night at and sweep the weekend series at Magness Arena.

Chrona posted his second shutout of the season and the fifth of his career for Denver (14-5-1, 7-3-0 NCHC), which received goals from Carter Savoie, Brett Stapley, Antti Tuomisto and Carter Mazur to improve its home unbeaten streak to 10-0-1 on the season. The 11-game run is the fourth-longest unbeaten streak to begin a campaign in program history.

Savoie added two assists in the game to finish with his fourth, three-point outing of the season, and freshman Sean Behrens picked up two helpers as well for his fourth multi-point night of his freshman campaign.

There was no shortage of infractions in the series finale, as a combined 54 penalty minutes were issued and each team received 10 power-play opportunities in the contest. The difference was that the Pioneers capitalized on theirs while the Mavericks (14-8-0, 4-6-0 NCHC) didn't.

Savoie opened the scoring with 9:30 left of the first period on Denver's first power play of the night, which came from a major boarding penalty on Joey Abate. The St. Albert, Alberta, native took passes from Sean Behrens and Bobby Brink and tallied from the right circle for his 13th goal of the season.

DU's lone marker at even strength came at 5:15 of the middle frame as Stapley, who was playing in his 100th career game, scored from the slot after Savoie won the puck along the end wall with a good forecheck.

The Pios sealed the contest in the third period with a pair of man-advantage markers, the first of which was from an outside shot by Antti with 8:27 left to play. Mazur then knocked in a loose puck in the crease in the final minute of regulation after Savoie's shot snuck through Omaha goalie Isaiah Saville, who finished with 33 saves.

Denver was playing on a Sunday for the first time this season after doing so three times last year (1-2-0). The Pioneers were originally set to play St. Cloud State this weekend, but COVID issues with the Huskies and North Dakota ended up resulting in a DU-UNO matchup instead.

The Pioneers now prepare for in-state rival Colorado College next weekend, as the squads will play a home-and-home series to begin the quest for the Gold Pan. The teams square off on Friday at Magness Arena, with a new game time of 8 p.m. MT. DU will then make its first visit to the new Robson Arena in Colorado Springs on Saturday.
