Ezeudu Reaches 1,000 Career Points in Denver’s Loss at Kansas City

Uju Ezeudu became the fastest to 1,000 career points in Denver’s Division I history

KANSAS CITY, Mo.  – Junior Uju Ezeudu became the fastest player to reach 1,000 career points in Denver's Division I history, but the DU women's basketball team fell to Kansas City 72-54 on Thursday night in the Swinney Center.

Inside the Box Score:
Ezeudu wrapped up her 14th career double-double on Thursday, finishing with a team-high 22 points to go with 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Meghan Boyd was Denver's only other double figure scorer in the setback, finishing with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

First Quarter:
Ezeudu knocked down a triple to open the evening in Missouri, three of her five points in the opening five minutes of the contest. Kansas City responded to the Ezeudu triple with a 15-4 run over the next 4:39 to take an eight-point advantage with just under four minutes to play in the period.

Meghan Boyd put a stop to the Roos run with a triple to cut the Pioneers deficit to five. Boyd's three kickstarted a 10-3 run for the Pioneers that eventually cut the Kansas City lead to two by quarter's end. Boyd and Ezeudu had six apiece in the first. Indeya Sanders also hit a three in the opening quarter, a 10-minute stanza that saw the two teams combine for nine shots from beyond the arc.

Second Quarter:
Boyd connected on her first two shots of the second quarter to stay perfect through the first 15 minutes of play with 11 points. The Roos continued to hit their shots from the outside as well, maintaining a two-point lead at the second-quarter media timeout.

The hot shooting finally cooled off in a stretch where both teams went over three minutes without finding a bucket. Paige Bradford stopped that drought with a bucket for Kansas City, but Ezeudu scored inside on the next possession to cancel out the Bradford bucket and keep it a two-point game.

Kansas City took a seven-point advantage into the intermission. Boyd shared the game-high with Naomie Alnatas, sitting on 11 points at the break. Ezeudu had eight in the opening 20 minutes and Makayla Minett chipped in five for the Crimson and Gold.

Third Quarter:
The Roos outscored the Pioneers 17-9 in the third quarter to take a 15-point advantage in to the final 10 minutes. Ezeudu had Denver's final four points of the quarter, including a pair from the foul-line to reach the 1,000 point milestone.

Fourth Quarter:
An 11-5 run for the Pioneers to start the quarter cut the Kansas City lead to nine with 4:30 to play in regulation. The two teams traded both buckets and free-throws the next couple of minutes before the Roos pulled away further down the stretch to extend the margin to 18 points.
