No. 5 Pioneers Defeat Miami RedHawks 4-2

Hockey sweeps weekend road series in Ohio

OXFORD, Ohio. – The No. 5 Denver Pioneers hockey team defeated the Miami RedHawks 4-2 on Saturday night at Goggin Ice Center to sweep the weekend set.
 
Senior Ryan Barrow scored the game-winning goal off a rebound 5:42 into the third period, and senior Brett Stapley contributed three assists as DU extended its unbeaten streak to a season-best eight games (7-0-1). Freshman Sean Behrens and senior Cameron Wright also scored, while McKade Webster sealed the game with an empty-net marker from center ice with 1:08 left.
 
Denver (18-5-1, 11-3-0 NCHC) led 1-0 after the first period as Colorado Avalanche prospect Behrens tallied at 13:03 of the frame. He took a pass from Stapley, deked his way past a Miami defender and scored with a wrister that went top shelf.
 
Wright doubled the Pioneers' lead on the power play with a deflection 7:50 into the middle frame, but the RedHawks (4-20-2, 1-14-1 NCHC) knotted the score at 2-2 before the period was over with markers from Matthew Barbolini and Jack Olmstead.
 
Barrow scored his fifth of the season in the front half of the third period after Stapley's shot caromed right to him in the mid-slot, and the DU alternate captain hit twine with his ensuing wrister.
 
Goaltender Magnus Chrona made 19 saves. Denver outshot Miami 46-21, including by a 15-4 margin in the third period.
 
Forward Bobby Brink had an assist to extend his point streak to eight games, a new career long. He has three goals and 11 assists on his current run and now has 26 points (5g/21a) in the last 16 games.
 
The Pioneers won 5-4 on Friday night in Oxford after erasing a two-goal deficit in the final 3:03 and then winning in overtime on a tally by Mike Benning.
 
Denver now returns to Magness Arena for a four-game homestand. The Pios host St. Cloud State next Friday and Saturday before taking on Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 11-12

  • The Pioneers finished the month of January 6-0-1 and have completed each month this year with a winning record.
  • Sean Behrens extended his point streak to now a career-long six games (2g/6a).
  • Brett Stapley had his second three-assist game of the season, and it was his third three-point performance of the campaign.
  • Denver has recorded four straight games with 40 or more shots on goal.
  • DU has now scored a power-play goal in five consecutive contests.
