Sean Behrens Named NCHC Defenseman of the Week

Denver freshman had three points over two games at Miami

DENVER – Freshman Sean Behrens of the Denver Pioneers hockey team has been named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's Defenseman of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Behrens recorded three combined points (1g/2a) in Denver's two games at Miami University last weekend, while also contributing five blocked shots.

The Barrington, Illinois, native began the weekend by blocking two shots and contributing the primary assist on Cole Guttman's goal with 3:03 remaining in the third period that began DU's comeback bid. The Pioneers went on to score again before regulation ended to erase a two-goal deficit and then defeated the RedHawks 5-4 in overtime.

On Saturday, Behrens tallied the game-opening goal in the first period before having an assist on Ryan Barrow's game-winner. It was his third marker of the season and fifth multi-point performance of 2021-22. He also added three blocks, tying a season high.

Behrens is now on a career-long six-game point streak, having recorded two goals and six assists on his current run.

He leads all Denver defensemen with 21 points (3g/18a), ranks second in the nation in assists and third in points by a freshman defender.

This is Behrens' third NCHC Defenseman of the Week award, with him having also picked up the accolade on Oct. 18 and Jan. 17.

North Dakota's Riese Gaber was named the NCHC Forward of the Week, Colorado College's Matt Vernon picked up Goaltender of the Week honors and Miami's Red Savage earned accolades as the Rookie of the Week. Denver's Brett Stapley (Forward) and Massimo Rizzo (Rookie) were also nominated for player of the week awards.

UP NEXT: The No. 4 Pioneers host No. 7 St. Cloud State this weekend at Magness Arena. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. MT, while Saturday's contest starts at 6 p.m. MT.
