No. 1 Pioneers Fall to No. 13 Massachusetts

Denver Hockey outshoots UMass 30-24

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 1 Denver Pioneers hockey team fell 3-0 to the No. 13 Massachusetts Minutemen on Saturday night at Mullins Center.

Denver (2-0-2) outshot UMass (2-0-1) for the second-straight game, this time by a 30-24 margin, but couldn't get any pucks past goaltender Luke Pavicich in his shutout. DU netminder Magnus Chrona finished with 21 saves.

The Minutemen began the night by being on the receiving end of a fortunate bounce, as Scott Morrow scored from the right side after his outside shot caromed off the end wall, the side of the net and off Chrona just 37 seconds into the game.

UMass outshot DU 11-6 in the first period, but Denver had the advantage in the final two frames, holding a 17-9 edge in the second and 7-4 in the third.

The Pioneers were able to hem the Minutemen in their own zone several times throughout the game, but UMass's defense held firm and didn't allow any grade-A scoring chances each time. Late in the second period, DU got one of those looks and had five shot attempts but couldn't convert. Minutes later, UMass capitalized on its opportunity as the puck rebounded right to Matt Koopman in the slot and the forward's ensuing shot found twine through traffic at 16:52.

Massachusetts added its final goal of the night with less than two minutes remaining in regulation on a long shot into an empty net.

Both teams finished 0-for-2 on power-play opportunities.

UP NEXT: Denver returns home next weekend to play its third-straight Hockey East Conference opponent as No. 15 Providence College visits Magness Arena on Friday (7 p.m. MT) and Saturday (6 p.m. MT). The Pioneers will raise their 2022 NCAA National Championship banner prior to Saturday's game.
