DU Hockey Moves Up to No. 3 in Polls

Pioneers travel to face Miami this weekend

DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team ranks No. 3 in the country in both the DCU/USCHO.com poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll after the latest rankings were released on Monday.

The Pioneers moved up one spot in both polls after being No. 4 last week in each.

Denver earned seven first-place votes in the DCU/USCHO.com and four in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine after sweeping its series against now-No. 13 Providence last weekend. The Pioneers won 4-1 on Friday and 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.

The top four teams of the DCU/USCHO.com poll are separated by only 74 points. DU garnered 881 points in the poll and is 23 points ahead of No. 4 Michigan and trail No. 2 St. Cloud State by just three points (886). Minnesota remains at No. 1 with 932 points and 21 first-place votes.

It is even closer in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings, as DU (590), Minnesota (632), St. Cloud State (604) and Michigan (571) are all within 61 points of one another.

St. Cloud State was the program that made one of the biggest moves in the polls, going from No. 8 to No. 2 after a weekend sweep of then-No. 2 Minnesota State.

Overall, five NCHC squads are ranked with North Dakota (6/7) joining Denver and St. Cloud State in the top 10. Western Michigan (17/16) and Minnesota Duluth (20/19) are also in the top 20 while Miami received votes in each ranking as well.
