DENVER – Denver Pioneers hockey senior
Magnus Chrona was named the NCHC Goaltender of the Week while sophomore
Carter Mazur was recognized as Forward of the Week, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Monday.
Â
Chrona backstopped the Pioneers to a series sweep of the Miami RedHawks to open conference play this past weekend. Chrona stopped 42-of-44 shots in the two road games in Oxford, Ohio, and only allowed one even-strength goal. He posted his 10th career shutout by making all 24 saves on Friday in a 4-0 win before denying 18-of-20 shots on Saturday in DU's 4-2 comeback victory.
Â
The Stockholm, Sweden, native's 10 career shutouts are the fourth-most in NCHC history and are tied for the fourth-most in school history with Marc Cheverie (2007-2010). Chrona has started six straight games and is on a four-game winning streak. He owns a 5-2-0 record, 1.90 goals-against average and .918 save percentage on the season.
Â
This is Chrona's fifth career NCHC Goaltender of the Week award after he earned the honor three times last season.
Â
Mazur recorded five goals in two games at Miami, recording a hat trick on Friday before registering two markers on Saturday. His first career three-goal game was also a natural hat trick, the first by a Denver player since Quentin Shore on Nov. 21, 2014 and just the fourth by a Pioneer in the last 24 years. Mazur tallied the game-tying and game-winning goals on Saturday as Denver scored three markers in the third period in the come-from-behind victory.
Â
The Jackson, Michigan, native's five goals in a two-game weekend series was the most by a DU skater since Jarid Lukosevicius also had five tallies in a home set versus Western Michigan on Nov. 2-3, 2018. Mazur ranks tied for first in the country with 10 goals on the season and is tied for ninth in points with 12.
Â
This is Mazur's first career Forward of the Week award and his third weekly honor from the NCHC as he was twice named Rookie of the Week as a freshman last season.
Â
The two weekly honors give the Pioneers three total on the 2022-23 campaign after forward
Rieger Lorenz was named Rookie of the Week on Oct. 24.
Â
Minnesota Duluth's Wyatt Kaiser was named the NCHC Defenseman of the Week, while Western Michigan's Ryan McAllister was Rookie of the Week. Denver sophomore
Massimo Rizzo, who had seven points (1g/6a) in two games, was also a finalist for this week's Forward of the Week honor.
Â
UP NEXT: The No. 2 Pioneers continue NCHC play this weekend as they host No. 4 St. Cloud State in top-five showdown at Magness Arena. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. MT while Saturday's starts at 6 p.m. MT, with both being available on NCHC.tv.
