DENVER, CO --Touko Tainamo pulled down 11 rebounds and Tyree Corbett added 10 more, and the Denver men's basketball team beat the Colorado College Tigers 90-68 at home Thursday.
The Pioneers (2-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Corbett, who secured a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Lukas Kisunas tacked on 18 points and six rebounds and Justin Mullins helped out with 10 points and two steals.
Denver pulled down 47 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Colorado College's 30, led by Tainamo's 11 boards. The Pioneers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into 12 second chance points.
The Denver defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 17 Colorado College turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Tainamo's two steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 18-11 advantage, Denver went on a 10-0 run with 13:31 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Ben Bowen, to increase its lead to 28-11. The Pioneers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 49-29 advantage. Denver did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 49 points close to the basket.
Denver kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 61-40 with 14:05 to go in the contest. The Pioneers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 90-68 win. Denver got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 17 of its 41 total points.
